Willie Faye (Skaggs) Combs age 98 passed away on December 20, 2018 in San Antonio, TX. She was born in Midland, TX November 7, 1920. She moved to San Marcos, TX in 1926 where she graduated from San Marcos High School in 1938. Received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas Teacher College in San Marcos on May 27, 1941. She had a job teaching 4th grade in Somerville, TX but instead she married Lt. John R. Combs in Reno, NV on July 13, 1941. They lived in Pendleton, OR and Boise, ID until Lt. Combs was sent overseas during WW II to England and North Africa. Their son, John R. Combs, Jr., was born at Randolph Field in San Antonio, TX on September 4, 1942. Capt. Combs returned from Africa and the family was stationed at Long Beach, CA where their daughter, Elaine, was born on November 15, 1944. Major Combs departed the Air Force in 1944 and went to work for Exxon Oil Company in Baytown, TX where the family moved and remained for 40 years. During that time Col. Combs was called back into the Air Force for two years for the Korean War but remained in the Air Force Reserves for 30 years allowing the family to remain in Baytown. Willie Faye was able to manage the affairs of the home, provide full time care as wife and mother, participate in the P.T.A., was a Boy and Girl Scout Leader, attended Lee College and was a member of the Church of Christ. Willie Faye and John traveled extensively for 17 years in a travel trailer after he retired. They moved into Air Force Village II, San Antonio, TX on February 28, 1991.
Willie Faye is preceded in death by her husband, John R. Combs, and daughter, Elaine Combs Brown. She is survived by her son, John R. Combs, Jr., daughter-in-law GayLyn Combs; granddaughter, Tammy Combs Phelps and husband Tony Phelps, great-grandchildren, Danielle and Kevin Phelps; grandson, Michael Combs and wife Kristin Combs, great-granddaughters, Lauren and Madelyn Combs. She also leaves behind five nieces, Sue Skaggs Adams, Carol Skaggs Sedbury, Jan Skaggs Hardin, Carolyn Combs Vaught and Sandra Combs Moulton.
Graveside service and interment will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Earthman Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown, TX.
