I'm all grown up, but much like a child I eagerly looked to see his face every time I was home.  He was the first person I would look for EVERY SINGLE TIME I visited.  Those hugs and that smile will never be forgotten. And, when he would see me, even at 45, I think he still saw a 5 year old little girl.  Those are the awesome kind of hugs he gave.  Hope he is keeping my daddy company.  Can't believe he's gone.
What a blessing he was to so many.

So many wonderful memories. Where would I begin to share what a blessing it was to have Hubert as an older cousin. He, Dorthy Mae and the boys would take turns visiting in the summer's. One summer myself and our family would go to Beaumont for a week. The next summer they would come to Tennessee to visit. My favorite Memories are of swimming and playing in the gulf when He took us there. I remember visiting the plant even before I knew that the gasoline in our cars was derived fro the oil companies that Hubert worked for. I remember His prayers at the dinner table and am often reminded when my own husband will pray at our table and the food will get cold before he finishes. Hubert always prayed for everyone! Our last visit when they came to Tennessee was glorified by the celebration of my grandsons birthday. He was very amazed and excited to hear about the bear the guest boys saw at the ditch beside my mom's house. He never let on at all that he doubted them. I was a little perturbed that some of the older attendants had kinda showed out and I remember him following me to a spot under the flag in my dads yard to talk to me and assure me that nothing happened that I could change and that everything was alright. He asked me why I had come to that spot to cry. I told him to be close to my daddy. He said what would he say to you. I told him of course that he would have said it wasn't my fault that somebody acted up and to go back in the house and enjoy my relatives. We agreed and we walked arm and arm to the house. Also on this trip, I had a dog that just simply did not like people outside of myself and my mother. As he came into the yard i started to warn him about Starlett, when promptly she jumped into the swing where Hubert was sitting, laid her head on his lap and went to sleep. Hmmm I always said if a dog likes the man he must be alright. Yes Hubert was alright. He had a smile and a hug for you. He was a Godly man and we all are blessed to have known him. 

From  the Romero family....Our favorite memory of Sonny was...Every time you saw him be would always say before he left "I'm so glad you got to see me!"...So we all tried to beat him to it by saying how glad we were we got to see him...Our family loved him & his crazy humor.  I'm  so sorry to the family for the loss of this wonderful man.

One warm day, after church, several of us were throwing rocks at coke cans that were set up on the wall around the AC’s at Ridgewood. . Todd went to set the cans and I violated a cardinal rule: firing when someone was down range. I caught Todd on the forehead. Todd was bleeding profusely and I was devastated. We took Todd to Hubert where I was sure I would meet a wrathful response and a lecture.  Hubert wiped some blood off to reveal the wound, turned to look at me and said, “don’t worry. That’s nothing a safety pin won’t fix.”  It was a big deal to me then and now that I’m older than he was when this happened, it is a bigger deal to me. Unfortunately, there were several times I gave Hubert an option for an angry response or an understanding one and he always chose to be kind to me.  Great lessons. 

Hubert was a great example for me when Deanna and I had moved here from Puerto Rico in 2012. He welcomed us with open arms our first time attending Ridgewood and took us to others to welcome us. He wanted to get to know us and invited us to come to his home a share a meal with them. We had the opportunity to drive to Houston with him for a series of tests. He shared his passion to raise his children participating in Boy Scout activities. He would lead by an example to be reverend by having service at the camp outs with his boys and invited all who wanted to participate. He and Dot became involved in the visitation ministry and truly followed the Bible in going out and sharing the word of the Lord to all. When I think of Hubert, I think of how in John 3, verse 21 “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.” He will be truly missed.

Hubert has been a friend of Marilyn and I for a number of years and I was always glad to be around him.  He substituted preaching at the Silsbee Church of Christ when  our marriage was young, and we invited him to lunch in our home on many occasions.  When hurricane Rita came he called to see if he and Dorthy could stay with us at our home in Jasper.  We graciously agreed, but when Jasper had to evacuate, he would not leave as he said he had to preach in Winnie that Sunday.  I told him i did not think he would make it to Winnie.  Long story short, he and Dorthy stayed in our home during the hurricane with trees falling all around.  Great friend, and Christian.

Hubert will be missed. I enjoyed knowing him. He was fun to keep company with. R.I.P. brother.

Hubert was a very good friend of our family.   He married my mom and stepdad, Jack Ramsey. He also did Papa Jack’s funeral in 2010.  He could always make me smile . He will truly be missed. My prayers and love go out to the McCray family.         Belinda and Fred Nation

Mr. and Mrs. McCray were the best neighbors we could have. It is a small community on Acorn Circuit and we were blessed to have known them. They watched over my brother and I but especially as my parents got older, they were the guardian angels! I will always be grateful to Mr. McCray for loving us and keeping tabs on my dad as he climbed on the roof at 85. We love you so much! Always, Krissy Richmond 

It was the upmost pleasure to know you for the past year and a half. You not only allowed me in your home but into your life and with that I am so grateful. You have a huge heart and were so special to me. I looked forward to our weekly visits and even when I was tired you and Mrs. McCray always cheered me up. You both are so dear to me and will always have such a special place in my heart. My heartfelt condolences go to the entire family as I know what a wonderful man you all are missing.

Oh my goodness - memories of Hubert.  The great Troop 65 Campouts to Jenkin’s Farm and to Collins Camp in Votaw.  The ladies in Votaw and the extravagant dinner they fixed for the Troop one time.  Hubert’s Ford Truck we called The McCray Hilton on campouts.   One particular campout to Camp Edgewood when Mark Anderson went with us.  Hubert and Mark were such a pair of cut ups.   Just so many memories, Hubert was a very good Man of God and a great influence on all of us.  Those were some very Good years.   Blessings and condolences.  

Hubert is my Dad and I love him dearly & we shared so many wonderful memories. 
He loved people and enjoyed greeting and meeting people and liked to joke around make people smile . He was known as Sonny and his personality was happy and joyful .
For whatever reason the first memory that arose in my mind when trying to think of a memory to share was Dad & I going fishing on Village creek in a Motor boat . 
Dad grew up fishing with a cane pole in Vidor and was  a great fisherman . 
When we were fishing together at Village creek he would pick a spot & cast his line and I would cast mine in the same area only a few feet away & minutes later he would be reeling in a fish that he caught ,& whenever I would feel a tug on my line I would jerk line but every time I would reel my line in my bait would be gone . 
For several the same thing would happen ,& he would catch & release and all day I never did catch anything . I was amazed & never could figure out why when I was doing the same thing as him and using the same bait and casting in the same hole how he caught fish & I couldn’t . I decided he must have used his charm on the fish lol !
Another memory that I have is a Family vacation we had to the Great Smokey mountains . We drove to the mountains and pulled a pop-up camper . We had a campsite with a concrete table and after cooking dinner and playing some games we all went to bed in the camper . In the wee hours of the morning we woke up to a large commotion outside and Dad ran out of the camper with a broom 🧹. After dinner earlier we had left the ice chest full f food on the picnic table and a black bear 🐻 decided to try to help self to a meal and put his claw into the ice chest . Dad woke up and ran outside with the broom 🧹 and scared the bear 🐻 Away . The poor bear didn’t have a chance with a wild man coming at him swinging a broom and it ran away lol ! 
The Bear didn’t get into the ice chest but left a large claw marks and we had that ice chest for years later !

I last say Mr. McCray as a very young man right out of French High School. I recall him as a man dedicated to his family and community who always had a welcoming smile and handshake. The world is a dimmer place without his light to encourage us. May he rest in peace, and condolences to his family. 

Mr. McCray always had a welcoming smile and a hug for all.  His warm heart and presence will be missed.  Know his joy must be immense to be singing with the angels in the presence of God.

Such fond memories of Mr. McCray, growing up next door, scouting trips and the Sunday morning sermons.  I will never forget, Mr. McCray calming my parents when I ran away from home and spent the night in his yellow and white Ford with the camper shell.  Later on, long talks in the driveway or front yard.  What a jokester. I will never forget his good humor.  I was surely blessed to have known him.  Rest In Peace.

My favorite memory of Sonny is seeing him at the foot of the stairway that I walked down to marry his cousin, David.  Sonny performed the ceremony which made it extra special. He must have done a good job as the marriage lasted until David passed away over 20 years later.   Sonny always had a smile and hug and a huge heart. He will be missed. ❤️

   I can see you standing at the door of heaven greeting people. I remember you bringing me to bible school every summer.  We had many fun times at your house over the years. I will never forget the fort in your backyard.  We borrowed eggs from another neighbors hen house and had egg wars many times in your back yard. You would tell us to clean it up and go home... and don’t do that again.  We didn’t until the next day. Todd, Michael, and Nathan I thank you for sharing your dad with all of us neighborhood kids. We had a great childhood because of our parents. 

Such a good kind hearted man. I am so sorry and am praying for you all in this time of loss.

I knew Mr. McCray as the father of my friends. I remember eating dinner with the family when there was some brotherly bickering going on at the table. Mr. McCray, with the temperament and voice of a classic TV dad, calmly sorted everyone out and dinner continued. Being the father of three sons with very different personalities wasn't easy but Mr. McCray clearly loved the job and loved them.

When we came to Ridgewood Mr. McCray always made us feel welcome and was always there to lend an ear.   We enjoyed many youth activities with Nathan and Todd at their home.  He will be missed. 

When Hubert and Dot came to  Lucas Place he walked in the door with such a Great Presence! They where so stellar in appearance. He always took care of Dot and made sure that she had everything she needed. As he told us of his military life he would smile with such passion.  As he told us of his love and care for Dot the joy was even more evident.  He will be missed.

Many, many Sunday visits to Ridgewood, I was greeted by Mr. Hubert with a handshake or a hug-and always with his big smile! He always made me smile! Such a kind and thoughtful man. He and Miss Dot were always so sweet to me and I appreciate them very much as part of my childhood and grown-up years! Please tell my Mama and Daddy hello and enjoy a well earned eternity, Mr. Hubert❤️

Hubert was a gentleman. He always encouraged us. God's blessings on his wife, sons and family.
