She was born to Samuel and Ada Elender Portie on January 19, 1925 in Beaumont, Texas. After graduating from Vidor High School in 1943, she worked at the Phelan Company and retired from the Port of Beaumont in 1986.
Iris loved traveling with her late husband Don after retirement. They spent many years taking bus tours and exploring the USA. Her children and grandchildren loved hearing stories from their trips. She was a skilled baker and was known for her famous Pecan Pies and Rum Cake. You never left Iris' home without a pie or cake to go. Iris believed that "it was better to give than receive" and that was evident in her continuous volunteer work with NARFE, Senior Friends, Beaumont Bone & Joint, Meals on Wheels and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She had a passion for dancing especially to French music , as that was her heritage and winning against her friends and grandchildren at card games. She will be missed immensely by her family and friends, however, she always believed that the "Lord will take care of it".
Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2021 at the funeral home.
Iris was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald E. Ney, parents Samuel and Ada Elender Portie, daughter, Miriam Cade Nichol, brothers, Frank Portie, O'Neal Portie, Delmer Portie, Sammie Portie, and Glen Portie, sisters, Adelee Kessinger, Mary Stutz, Margie Puckett , including 2 siblings who died at birth.
Iris is survived by her daughters, Patricia Cade Nolan of Fort Worth, Tx., Terri Cade Verde and her husband Steve special son-in-law of Beaumont, Tx, grandchildren, Elizabeth Tanner Holland and husband Mike of Beaumont, Tx, Irissa Nolan of Chicago, IL, Justin Daniels of Nome, Tx, Bill Daniels and wife Victoria of Nome, Tx, Cody Allen and wife Morgan of Cedar Park, Tx., Maureen Sapienza of Oahu, HI., Damien Verde and wife Ami of Vidor, Tx, Brandy Allen Neff and her husband Mike, and Adam Allen; great grandchildren, Tanner Holland, Garrett Daniels, Gaige Daniels, Gradin Daniels, Maci Verde, Jordan Verde, Makena Travis, Paige Zacijek, Payton Zacijek, and PJ Zacijek. She is survived by many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
