James grew up in Groves and attended Port Neches-Groves High School where he graduated in 1968. He immediately joined the United States Air Force Reserves where he served from 1968 until 1975. James was employed by Texaco and Coastal Marines in Port Arthur for many years; he eventually retired from the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District after over 20 years of employment there. He always said he loved working around the kids at the high school because they kept him young.
James, or JT as many called him, loved family and fishing; he would rather spend the weekend in a boat or on a shoreline in the hot Texas sun than sit in an air-conditioned house. He always said that his two favorite birds were a Crow and a Seagull; the Crows reminded him of being in the woods, and the Seagulls reminded him of being on the beach. What a great Father to have grown up with…
James was preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as Ricky Thompson, his little brother. James is survived by his two sons, James Larry Thompson Jr. and Chase Aaron Thompson, as well as grandchildren Faith, Alexa, Price, and Brianna.
Services will be announced at a later date in the Spring, when the birds are singing and the sun is shining. He would have wanted it that way. He never complained about anything; not pain, not weather, not finances, nothing. He would rather tell you a joke, or anything else to make you laugh. To say that he will be missed is the understatement of this century; God bless our Dad.
