Morris George, of Beaumont, Texas, went to be with his heavenly father on Sunday, December 4, 2011, at the age of 87. Morris was born June 25, 1924 in Port Arthur, Texas. He was the fifth of nine children.
Morris began working at a very young age to help support his family. He has shared some of his experiences through the years. As a child he roasted and sold peanuts on the street corner, delivered for a pharmacy and a grocery store, and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCCamp) for $1/day. At the age of 16, he performed hard physical labor and sent his earnings home to help support his family. Drafted in the Us Army during WW2, he served as a Hospital Orderly, Military Policeman and also served in the Motor Pool for both the Ordinance Division and a Field Hospital. After the war he became a prison guard in the Philippine Islands, guarding Japanese prisoners of war. Other jobs included: Tack Welder, Lab Technician, Carpenter and Maintenance Man for Region 5 School District, where he retired.
He was completely devoted to his wife Lois, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together. He always showed such love and respect for his immediate and extended family. Dad (Paw-paw) always provided a sense of security and safety that only a godly man can provide. Morris and Lois raised their family in Beaumont, Texas, where they were faithful members of The Apostolic Church. After Morris’ retirement, his wife was elected Pastor of a small church in Broaddus, Texas. Due to her failing health, they returned to Beaumont where he cared for her faithfully during her illness.
Morris was a gentle and kind man. Doing for others came naturally for him; like repairing appliances, fixing roofs and replacing water pipes … all this up his 80’s, just for a cup of coffee.
He lived his life with simplicity, yet fully and with joy. He made the best of every situation, therefore people enjoyed being around him. He smiled through the most difficult times, and his tender spirit was respected and cherished. Some have called him a little giant … completely unselfish, filled with love, and a wonderful example of a Father.
He is preceded in death by his lovely wife of fifty-three years, Alma Lois George. His parents: Bertha and Asseph George; siblings: Bertha Thomas, Margaret George, Eddie George and Latife (Tuffy) George.
He is survived by his two children: Diana Thoreson of Lufkin, TX, and Andrew George and his wife Twyla of Lumberton, TX. Four grandchildren: Eric Thoreson and his wife Gina, Shana Gregory, Joel Thoreson and his wife Susan, and Marissa George. Great grandchildren: Bailey and Samuel Thoreson, and Blake Gregory. Siblings: Yvonne Pampolina, Loretta Rastelli, Mary DeRuiter, and Norma Lee Fountain. Close life companions: Linda Hickman, and Bradley Honeycutt; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
The family will receive guests for visitation on Tuesday, December 6, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 7, at 10:00 a.m., both the visitation and funeral will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Beaumont, Texas.
