I share many of my memories of Uncle Lee with the rest of the cousins and my sister. We had some grand times at the family gatherings in the summers of our childhood. I know I always looked forward to the homemade ice cream (I think Uncle Lee turned it with a hand crank?) and the possibility of a ride in the go cart he built. My own dad was usually pretty serious, but Uncle Lee could make him laugh faster than anyone else ever could. I loved listening to his funny stories that always involved "ole" somebody. Even the dog was "ole" Freckles.

I have one memory just to myself. When my Grandma was in the nursing home and pretty far gone, I wanted the chance to visit her before I left the country for a new job. Uncle Lee told me I might not want to remember her the way she was at the time, but instead to think about her as she used to be. However, he agreed to take me with him when he went on his daily trip to feed her and sit with her, even though she didn't even realize he was there. Well, I don't remember Grandma that way- I am able to focus on the lovely times we had. But I do remember the love and devotion Uncle Lee showed for his mom.That was the measure of the man.

Buster and Sue were our neighbors when we lived on Detroit St. in Beaumont, TX. They were such sweet neighbors and friends to our family.

Buster and my dad James both built and repaired things and were in each other’s garages many times discussing Buster’s go carts, old cars, any cars, or my dad’s repairing of washing machines, refrigerators, washers, and dryers.

We had a cabin near Sam Rayburn Lake and it was built on a hill. Buster had an old faded out blue two door car that didn’t run any longer, and he gave it to our family.  We took it to the lake and Buster told us to take it to the top of the hill and hit the clutch a few times and it would get us down the hill. We had so much fun in that car and even though we didn’t have our license yet we couldn’t wait to get to the cabin. Buster was happy to hear the stories about his old blue car.

Buster and Sue were busy raising Lori and working, and then came Lee and when they built their home in Lumberton we were happy for them, but missed them very much from being in our lives.

They both touched everyone they ever met and how lucky Lumberton was to be getting such great people in their community.

I had a old 1950 Studebaker with a column shift that my dad and I painted green with paint brushes, and I called it “the green bomb.”  One day I was out driving and the column fell off in my hand. Buster put in a three speed in the floor board, and I drove that my senior year of high school. I will never forget him doing that for me and allowing me to be able to drive myself to school in 1971.  Like so many people have said in their memories of Buster, he was always helping someone to  make their life better.

God bless the Soileau family always. How lucky we all have been to have known Buster, this great and Godly man.



One thing Pawpaw always loved to do is go out to lunch with Mr. RE and myself. Every Tuesday we would make our trek to Mr. RE’s house to pick him up to go to town. Their two favorite places to go were Ro’s Seafood and Catfish Kitchen. I enjoyed listening to RE’s stories about his time in the Army during WWII and listen to them both reminisce about their time working in the plants and the crazy stuff and the men they encountered there. I’m always going to miss that……and just being with my Pawpaw.

Uncle Buster, your laugh always was infectious and made everyone around you laugh with you!  My fondness memory of you was at Lori’s rehearsal dinner, when dinner was late and you blamed it on what I ordered.  To this day I can’t remember what it was, but I remember laughing until my ribs hurt!!  I know you’re making them laugh in Heaven and I miss you terribly.  Just know that you were always my favorite Uncle!  I’ll love you always.

On March 3, 2018 my life changed forever. I lost the one man in my life who could fix anything and everything. He put together my first swing set and taught me how to swing. He taught me how to ride a bike and taught me how to fix the chain when it came off. He built my go-cart and taught me how to put air in the tires. He built my tree house and taught me how to hammer a nail. He got me my first car and taught me how to drive it. He gave me a gun and taught me how to shoot it. He gave me life and taught me how to live it. He taught me to sing and he taught me to laugh a lot even at myself. He taught me love and I married a good man. He taught me to do my best in school and I graduated from college with a 4 year degree because he taught me to believe that I could do it and not give up. He taught me to say please and thank you, to be helpful to others and listen to my heart. But most of all he taught me to cherish family and friends because life is short. My dad was a simple man. He was patient. He was kind. He never boasted. He was proud, but not prideful. He honored others and was not self-seeking. He had a quick temper, but not too easily angered. He always forgave us no matter what. My Dad always protected us, always trusted, always hoped and always persevered. Because my Dad was love, and love never fails. My Dad was always there, loving us and supporting us in his own quiet way. Now, his shop that he so painstakingly built with his own hands stands empty. No more projects to produce, no more engines to fix, no more tractors to restore or ride, no more whistling tunes, singing with the radio, jingling keys, or clanging metal. Silence. Painful silence. Memories. Stories I wish I could hear one more time. Silence. I miss my Dad. But, I am thankful for the time I had with the man God gave me to be my Dad. He was perfect to me. I love you Dad, and look forward to your warm smile when I see you again someday. Forever your loving daughter, Lori Denise

Dear Paw Paw, I miss you a lot, but I know that you are in a better place and you're not in pain anymore.  Thank you for being the best Paw Paw anyone could ever ask for. I am so thankful to have spent some of the days away with you. The memories I have with you will never leave my mind. They always make me smile and feel joy inside. I remember when I was younger we used to play tic-tac-toe and eat jelly beans. I remember the pink tractor that you painted for Breann and me. That tractor was so much fun and so pretty. Belle will miss you too. She will miss her best friend playing with her and her duck. I think about you every day and miss your smile and laugh that would light up the room. You are greatly missed and always will be. I love you to the moon and back.

An Ode of Love from Sue to Lee

The simple expression “I love you”
Could never have been more true
For all I ever wanted in life.
My heart was thrilled when you asked me to be your wife.

Our long courtship allowed us to better know one another
And to realize we need not look any further.
I felt your love for me so strong.
How could this marriage be wrong?

To be a good husband was in your soul.
Without a doubt you surpassed that goal.
Putting aside your own desires sometime
To make sure everyone else was fine.

How quickly the years fly by is not so apparent
Until before we knew it we had become parents.
A blonde little girl blessed our hearts
And soon gave us adventures of all sorts.

Not long afterward an adorable baby boy would follow;
Your namesake for sure another Soileau.
Now our family had increased by two
So there were many more tasks to do.

But through the years we faced each new day
Knowing we could overcome what may.
And be assured we had done our best
Allowing us by night to be at rest.

When three grandchildren came into our lives,
We really began to realize
Life is truly a grand experience
Filled with laughter, pride and exuberance.

As we grew old together I have to say, 
My life has been filled with joy every day
Knowing you were always there for me.
I couldn’t imagine any other way for it to be.

Now that our Lord has determined for us to part,
I know someday we’ll have a fresh start.
So, I’ll look forward to that day for your smiling face
And know it is all due to His amazing grace.


As I sat and tried to compile my thoughts about my Dad, I began to realize how hard it was to sum up this great man in a few short sentences. I continued to come back to the same feeling of, always there. My dad was always there. He explained to me on more than one occasion that he wished he had spent more time with my sister and I when we were growing up. He felt as if he had worked more than he should have when we were younger, trying to provide for us as a family, and had missed out on things. But the thing is, I can't seem to remember a time when he wasn't there. He always made time to take us on trips and family vacations. He was always there on holidays making memories with us. He spent time with me camping and motorcycle riding. He would spend his weekend in his shop working on projects and he always made me a part of it. My Dad was always there to help me if I needed anything fixed. He wouldn't do it for me, he would show me the way. He was there teaching me. He taught me how to work on things, to think through problems, and to find a solution.

When I grew older, he was always there if I had a question about  how something worked, because he had usually already worked on it himself. He was always there to give me advice about a situation that I was facing in my own life. My Dad was always there as a mentor to me on how to treat others, and what to expect out of others toward me. So many times in life you need someone to talk to, someone to guide you and to ask advice from, and my Dad was always there. I thank God that I was given a Dad that loved me and taught me so much about life and was always there.

Words cannot begin to express my deep sorrow with your loss. Cling to the love and precious memories that you share as a family and hold tightly to your faith and knowing God is right there beside you. This journey is very difficult, but you will find strength and comfort each day through God's love and the caring concern of family and friends. I am deeply saddened at the passing of your dear husband and father, Lee Sr. I have very fond memories of him and my heart goes out to you and the rest of your family. May God comfort you and send peace, Love Murphy

Buster was one of a kind. He made me laugh ALWAYS!! Many may not realize this, but Nita and Buster used to take me & Amy on their dates before they were married. I would go with Nita and Amy would ride with Buster (you had a Corvair at that time) and we'd race to our destination each one taking a different route. That had to be Buster's idea. He made everything good. And although he'll be missed terribly, you know he's already made Heaven a better place. All our love, Mel & Steve.

I was very saddened to hear about Uncle Lee's passing. I do not feel that he is gone from us. While we are not able to see him anymore, I have some very fond memories and can picture him laughing. He was always there for all of the kids and making sure the kids were having fun. From making ice cream to go carts and tractors and even snipe hunting. I believe this influenced me in that I always believe kids come first. I have enjoyed teaching kids to scuba dive much more than adults. My favorite memory of Mr. Lee was from our time together at FBC Lumberton. He was always such a sweet and compassionate person, and I always had fun playing and joking with him at the evening choir rehearsals or when we would get together for lunch at their house. He was the first one to teach me about a tractor, and never got tired of showing them to me on visits. He will always hold a special place in my heart, and I know he is giving tractor lessons in heaven!

The best memory I have is of Mr. Lee and Mrs. Nita. They were my Sunday School teachers when I was in 3rd grade. We were learning the books of the Bible. We would recite what we memorized each week. Well, Mr. Lee got a job in California. I only memorized through The Song of Solomon, then they moved. Thats all I have memorized to this day. 
I remember when they moved back. I was so excited. Mr. Lee and Mrs. Nita have always lived me and been there for me. Mr. Lee, you are a wonderful man of God. 

Lee, I am truly sorry for your loss, I know that your father was proud of the man you are. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.


It is so sad to lose a sweet friend.  We know Heaven shines brighter with his arrival. Bless you, his loving family, in the days ahead. Love you all.
