I'd like her family to know that so many people also miss her and her smile,  sense of humor and kindness. I worked with her on numerous  projects, most recently an ECHO collaborative for long term care. Creative and compassionate in her skills, I loved to work and problem solve with her.  I think of her and miss her regularly.

I'm so deeply saddened to hear of Janet's passing. I was privileged to meet Janet through her work as a social worker. Her skill, insight and compassion were the tools of a warrior. I watched her float in and slowly, methodically and with the wisdom of experience change the environment from dysfunctional to functional.  My practice has been forever changed through her gift of knowledge, time and care.  She was my phone a friend when all other tools had failed me and I knew her expertise was required. The world has lost an amazing soul and I pray for peace , healing and understanding her for family as they grieve her passing.  Today I cry with you and morn my friend.

I met Janet when we started the older adult initiative.  Knowledgeable and good humored Janet was a delight to work with. 

My heart goes out to her family.  

I met Janet nearly 20 years ago.  We worked together at Mt. St. Joseph where she served as a social worker.  Janet was smart, funny, compassionate and humble.  Her sweet smile made everyone feel like she was their best friend.  I can’t say enough about how sweet she was.  I remember when Janet fell in love and began planning her wedding to Jon, and how excited she was to have her twins.   She once opened up her beach home to me to come stay for a weekend when my heart was broken and needed to mend.  

When I think of Janet, I remember most her beautiful smile, her infectious laugh and her joy in helping others.  I will miss knowing she’s no longer on this earth making it a better place.   My deepest sympathies to Jon, Will and Kate.

I know I speak for so many co-workers from Mt. St. Joseph who loved, and will deeply miss, Janet Langbecker. We knew her on her journey to becoming “Janet Holboke” whom so many writers have aptly captured in the posts about her.  Almost 400 residents and their families, plus 60 “retired” nuns living on the property, and staff + volunteers witnessed her grace, insight and irreplaceable humor or a daily basis while she finished her MSW, and started LCSW certification on the side. She was a terrific facilitator, negotiator, and inspirational friend to us, and we’ve been so proud of her professional accomplishments since.  Many of us huddled in the social service office the day she finally shared that she “had met someone named Jon” …. and helped her rehearse prepared remarks for the elderly nuns who not only thought they could “inspire” her to convert, but to join the order of the Sisters of Mercy as well…!  Our hearts go out to her family and countless colleagues and friends who will miss her deeply. Janet, please keep an eye on us all —
we are still counting on you to guide us to meet people where they are, and help them to be the best they can be. 

I met Janet upwards of 30 years ago as a new Case Manager for APD in the ECS programs. She was so knowledgeable and yet so kind in her education process that it sparked in me a passion for serving individuals who struggle with mental illness. Janet helped shape my career, and for that I am grateful. But more importantly, I was blessed to continue to be able to interact with her on a regular basis and come to know what a sweet, caring, wonderful person she was behind the professional. She has left behind a legacy, both personally and in our older adult programs. 

I am so terribly sorry. I first met Janet through the Older Adult Behavioral Health Initiative. She was always so kind and encouraging as we embarked on this journey. Her commitment to older adults was so clear and her work so very important. She made a huge difference and I am grateful to have known her. 

When I read that Janet passed away I was flooded with childhood memories.  Janet and I grew up on the same street in Portland and were best friends from the moment we met.  Janet came from a  loving family and shared her kindness and fun spirit every day.  Whether it was walking to and from school, playing in band or campfire girls or just riding bikes, she was such a happy person to be around.  I am so thankful to have spent time with her and I know I am a better person for having known her.  We lost contact for a few years of our lives but reconnected through Facebook after her dad passed away. It has been a comfort to read other memories that people have shared about Janet.  Her life was rich and full and she was loved like she loved others.  My sincere condolences to her family. 


As a professional colleague, I was always blown away for how insightful she was, and how willing she was to take risks. She is a great loss to Oregon behavioral health services and can’t be replaced.



Janet was a wonderful colleague! She was gifted at anything she did; bright, positive and always had a smile. Sorry I did not get to see her these past few years. I know she will be missed and I am so sorry to lose such a good person.

I sit  in shock to learn of this tragedy, and can't even stand to think it is real.  Though we worked together for many years on Enhanced Care, it had been almost a year since we last connected and she hadn't shared at that time the depth of her health struggles.   What we talked about was almost 100% Will and Kate centered.  from the moment she knew she was pregnant she was over the moon looking forward to those babies.  Work was important to her, but motherhood was it for her.  She made more contributions to elder mental health care than any one person I know (and I know a lot of people), and in equal part she gave to each of us in the lovely ways so many people have shared.  I'm hard pressed to name another person that has crossed my life path who was so much to so many.  The star for which all evenings wait --not in the sense of fame, but in the sense of one of a kind.  You are missed already, dear Janet.  My condolences to her whole family, and all of us.

Janet brought so much light and life into this world, and was a gift to all of us fortunate to know her both through work and in friendship beyond work. Her laser-sharp insight and grounded, down to earth approach helped so many compromised older adults over the years. She role modeled kindness, compassion, and a delightful sense of humor. 
My favorite memories of Janet are of the trip we took to Las Vegas with some of her friends many years ago--she was so much fun, and the life of the party; it's one of the best times I've ever had, and I am grateful for that.
My heart and prayers go out to Jon, Kate, Will and all of Janet's family and friends. It is an understatement to say she will be greatly missed.


I first met Janet when she joined our state ECMU team where we  worked together for many years and even shared an office for a few of them.  She was truly one of the most genuine people I have ever known. All of the tributes posted here are absolutely who she was; kind, compassionate, funny (hilarious, actually), supportive, smart, dedicated, knowledgeable, professional and a wonderful team member. She was someone you couldn't help but befriend. The day she brought her new twin babies, Will and Kate, to the office so we could meet them for the first time is one I remember well. It was a joy to hold those little ones and to see Janet beaming with happiness now that she was a mom. I know she would have given anything to stay with her family and I am especially heartbroken for her husband Jon and her children. May all of the love and special memories you share sustain you through this difficult time. Godspeed and Rest in Peace, Janet. 

I had the good fortune to work with Janet for over 10 years, first at Mt Hood CMHC and then at the state Office of Mental Health Services.  We became close friends.  I've so appreciated reading the loving tributes to Janet that people have posted here. With each I think, "Yes, I so agree; that's Janet."  Her friendship was a gift to me.
I offer my deepest sympathy to her family.

Humans do not get better than Janet.  She was always kind, the smartest person in the room, creative and organized (an unusual pairing).  She radiated optimism in a work world that was full of barriers and was a constant support for all of us in the field  of older adult mental health. I only met Janet at the beginning of the Pandemic when we moved in across the street, but I instantly felt like I’d known her for years. One of the kindest and most genuine people on the planet. When my elderly father came to live with us she always had a word of encouragement for me before I even knew that was her field.  The neighborhood is a darker place without her. 

John, Will, and Kate, my heart is broken for you. Always remember that she loved you all as much as you loved her. 

Yes, it's a Jimmy Buffett concert, but I can't imagine Janet without a smile on her face. A fun person with a wonderful spirit.

I was fortunate enough to know Janet before coming to GOBHI and had multiple opportunities to learn from her. She was a true gem of a human being. She was an effective teacher and lit up the room with her enthusiasm and humor. The loss is immense. 

I send my trust and belief in Janet’s transformative and welcoming spirit in her journey, and think, at this moment, of her sheer joy  in living, her outright laughter, her compassionate and dedicated expertise she offered to those she supported as clients and team members in the work we once did on our team at Mt Hood CMHC’s stellar Older Adult team. 🙏and in her remarkable overall  life’s work. She was wonderful beyond words.

I'm grateful to be among those who have known Janet. I will miss the feeling of her presence in a room, a sort of levity and air of comfort just in her being there. She had a way of feeling like a close friend, even if you'd just only met her. Her smile, her chuckle, her kindness above all -- there's so much to love about her. She used her gifts to help so many people and left a lasting mark in her community. My heart hurts for her family and dear friends, knowing how missed she will be in every sphere of her life.

Janet was a warm and caring light in this world.  She always had time for others, no matter how busy she might have been herself.  She was outwardly focused and thought of others always before herself.  She was warm, kind, funny, and thoughtful; I never heard her utter an unkind word.  
Taken way too soon from those who loved and admired her, may she be at peace in the arms of our Lord.

Janet was one of the experts in our ECHO programs who shared her wisdom on the topics of older adult behavioral health needs. Her presentation on supporting the emotional wellbeing of staff and residents of nursing facilities during COVID was especially well received. One participant stated, "Thank you, you helped us more than you could know."

Janet will be missed.   

It is with deep sadness and many tears, that we share the news of the passing of our friend and esteemed colleague Janet Holboke this past weekend.  She was a true champion for older adults  and for the Older Adult BH Initiative.   She was always ready to give a helping hand, provide a polished training, reach out to consult on a complex case, be part of an ECHO faculty.  Her kindness, her expertise and her deep commitment to the Initiative will always be appreciated and remembered.  I had  always held  to this truth that if Janet  was a  part of the OABHI it was  in good hands.  Her passing is a huge loss for the Initiative.    She was a remarkable clinician and a caring human being who  brought  so much value to the lives of the people we serve. She touched so many of us both professionally and personally. I am honored that I had the opportunity to know Janet. Her heart and her kindness taught me and nurtured me. I worked with Janet and through that work we became friends.
Will and Kate- she always put you first and her love and caring for you was constantly present in our conversations.

I am shocked and so saddened by this loss. I had the privilege of working with Janet over the years and she was always a shining star.  I loved talking to her and collaborating with her. Such a great loss. Her love for her family was always front and center in our conversations. My heart and prayers go out to  them.

My heart goes out to Janet's family, friends and all her work colleagues over the years.  I met Janet years ago when she worked for the ECMU at the state. All of my interactions with her from then to now have left me with found memories of someone so very dedicated to improving services for vulnerable individuals. Janet's heart was so present and such a beautiful gift. Whenever I had the opportunity to hear her teach or discuss work related matters she never failed to impart important lessons I needed. My deepest condolences for her family and close friends. 

The loss of Janet is a shock to the community. She was wonderful to work with, and I greatly enjoyed the time I had to work with her. She was kind and compassionate. She will be greatly missed.
