Joy Loretta Kingsley, 84 years of age, of Beaverton, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2015 surrounded by her family. Joy was born on May 13th, 1930 in Edmonton, Canada. She was 5th in a family of 4 boys and 3 girls to Frank G. and Annette A. (Donahue) Wallis. She was raised on the family farm where her love of animals started with her first pet, a little piglet named Sweeny.
After her graduation in 1947 from Onaway High School, her family moved from Canada to live in Seattle, having US citizenship from her father, who was born in New York.
She worked for Sears as an account cashier until her marriage to Neal Russell, a member of the Coast Guard. After living in many seaports, one being Moorhead City, NC, where her son Mike N. Russell was born, Neal succumbed to cancer in 1962.
Joy and Neal met Lyle Kingsley while stationed in Astoria. Joy and Lyle were reacquainted in 1964 and they married that same year. Joy spent many years as a caring housewife and mother.
After working at a Beaverton pet shop for 5 years she opened her own pet shop called “Pets of Joy,” in 1983, specializing in hand fed baby parrots.
Joy retired in 1998. She enjoyed gardening and canning. She helped Lyle with projects such as building a 1:27 scale replica of Union Grade School, which was adjacent to Union Cemetery.
Joy is survived by her husband Lyle Kingsley, her sister Trudy Francis, children Mike Russell and Valerie Kingsley, step-children Connie Jasnoch, Glen Kingsley and Wally Kingsley, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. A private family graveside service will be held. A memorial service will be on February 21, 2015. Call Jaci Clark for the time and place at 503-888-1891.
