Marc was born in Oakland, California on December 13, 1954. In 1958, his family moved to Santa Clara where Marc spent the rest of his childhood. Marc graduated valedictorian of his class at Santa Clara High School and went on to graduate from Stanford University in 1977 with a BS in Biology. While at Stanford, Marc played trombone in the infamous Stanford University Marching Band, which was banned from Disneyland and the entire state of Oregon at one time. Marc spent his college summers as a National Parks Ranger at Yosemite National Park’s Tioga Pass. In his sophomore year he met his future wife, Paula, at a mutual friend’s Christmas party and they were married one year after college graduation.
Marc knew he wanted to become a doctor at a very young age and he made it happen. He attended St. Louis University School of Medicine on a US Navy Scholarship and served his residency in Dermatology at the Naval Hospital in San Diego. After many, many moves and a 6 month tour on the USS Juneau in Western Pacific, Marc resigned his Navy Commission as a Commander in 1992.
Marc and Paula then settled in Oregon with their three sons and Marc practiced dermatology with Kaiser Permanente. He was an outstanding diagnostician and devoted to his patients. He enjoyed his work and the people he worked with. On July 8, 2014, after 22 years, Marc retired. Marc was bitten by the travel bug and enjoyed many well planned trips. In retirement he picked up photography and produced breathtaking photos of nature. He also became a film buff of classic movies.
Marc was preceded in death by his parents, Miyo and Bill Muramatsu. Marc is survived by his wife of 37 years, Paula (Schirle), his three sons, Keith (Genny) Muramatsu, Kyle Muramatsu, and Kurt Muramatsu; his sisters, Christina (John Clarke) Muramatsu and Saundra (Tom) Liu; his niece Jessica (Eric) Robinson, and other relatives, friends and colleagues too numerous to mention, who will all miss him dearly.
A Memorial Service for Marc will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 3:30pm at Beaverton First United Methodist Church, 12555 SW 4th Street, Beaverton, Oregon. If you can attend it is requested that you wear something blue, Marc’s favorite color. In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
