Margaret Ann Stein – Ann to those who knew her – was born the fourth of five children to Fred and Mary Banks on April 22, 1936. From a farm in the plains to the bright city lights of Burbank, and then to Eugene, and later Portland, her life was one of compassion.
After graduating from St. Francis High School in Eugene, she enrolled in courses at Marylhurst College in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where she became a postulant in the Novitiate of the Convent of the Holy Names.
Her brother Fred introduced her to a friend of his named Bill. After a fateful first date on December 31, 1954 she accepted her new calling, marrying her husband of 67 years in 1956 and raising eight children.
From the hills of Los Angeles, to Palo Alto near the bay, to Fort Wayne and the mid-west, and ultimately to the sleepy burg of Beaverton in 1973, where they completed their family and live to this day, she lived a life of service to everyone. Not only in deed and thought, but also within the privacy of her own spirit.
Ann began her working life as a nurse’s aide at Maryville Nursing Home. Into her fifties, and while raising the last of her children, she completed her associate degree in nursing, and continued her life of compassion and service as an RN, caring for the aging sisters at the Convent of the Sisters of Saint Mary’s of Oregon, and ultimately as a nurse in the memory care unit at Maryville Nursing Home before retiring.
No stranger to the news business, she had flair as a thespian, but her children knew her best for her love of music. She gave freely of her time, volunteering with the St. Vincent de Paul society at St. Cecilia’s Parish, singing in the choir, and playing with her grand- and great-grand- children.
She traveled the world with her husband, visiting Russia in the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, 16 countries in Europe, Romania, China, New Zealand, Greece, Australia, Portugal, Spain, Peru, Costa Rica, and Panama were among some of the adventures she had. Books, puzzles, and prayer filled the rest of her life.
Ann was preceded in death by her sisters Ade and Gail, her brother Fred, her son Billy, and is survived by her husband Bill, her sister Carolyn, daughters Mary, Beth, Gail and Theresa and sons Carter, Matt and Joe, as well as 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grand children (with one more on the way!), and 3 great-great grandchildren.
In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Vincent de Paul Society.
A mass of christian burial for Margaret will be held Monday, January 29, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at St.Cecila's Catholic Church, 5105 SW Franklin, Beaverton, OR 97005.
