Sandra Savage passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in the comfort of her beloved home of 52 years. It was the place she had shared for the past 36 years with her husband, Lester Savage, who preceded her in death on his birthday, June 12, 2025. Their home was a haven of love, laughter, and countless backyard gatherings.
Born in Las Vegas, Nevada, Sandra spent her early years moving throughout the West for her father’s work. Despite her travels, she always identified Montana—especially Poplar Street in Helena—as her true childhood home. It was there that she spent many joyful hours playing with friends and forming memories she cherished throughout her life.
Sandra moved to Oregon in the late 1960s and made it her permanent home. She took great pride in her education and lifelong career as a histotechnologist, a field in which she worked with dedication and skill. Her commitment to her profession reflected her deep belief in the value of learning and contributing meaningfully to the world.
Sandra was known for her kindness, her gentle spirit, and her genuine interest in every person she met. She greeted everyone with a warm hello, waved to strangers on the street, and made people feel seen, valued, and welcomed. She had a caring curiosity about the world and delighted in the unique stories and talents of others.
Her garden and deck were among her favorite places—quiet spaces where she could watch the birds, admire her flowers, and enjoy the simple beauty of the day. She loved her family deeply, cherished every moment spent with them, and celebrated their accomplishments with heartfelt pride.
Sandra leaves behind her daughter, Mardi Fitzgerald; her son, Lane Hickey; five stepchildren; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a wide circle of friends whose lives were brightened by her warmth and generosity.
Instead of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness in her memory, something Sandra practiced every single day.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 7th at 1:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, where Sandra will rest beside her beloved Lester, surely planning the next big backyard barbecue together for eternity.
