Yoo Syun Kim passed away early this morning. Her elder son Dr. Jung Yoo and his wife Anne Taylor Yoo were at her side and she passed peacefully. While her health declined in recent years, she experienced no major illness or pain.
Yoo Syun Kim was born February 20, 1937 to Kim Chae Sok and Chong Yon Hui in Korea. She lived through the Korean War as a young girl, then married, had two boys, and became divorced in her early 20’s. On the advice on her parents, she left her young toddlers in the care of her mother and came to the US to establish a new life for her children, who rejoined her in the US when they were 12 and 10 years old. She worked her way through school, graduating from Ray Vogue design school in Chicago and became a dress designer and then a pattern maker in the fashion industry. She retired from Henry Lee Designs and enjoyed her retirement in the Chicago area and subsequently in Portland.
As a single parent, she worked tirelessly for four decades with a singular focus. She was intrepid and resilient, not from innate constitution, but out of necessity. In so doing, she leaves an invaluable legacy for the generations that will follow her.
Yoo Syun Kim is survived by her sons Dr. Jung Yoo and Chris Sang, and their respective spouses Anne Taylor Yoo and Renee Sang, and grandchildren Jenny Yoo, Marcus Yoo, Elliott Sang, Esme Sang, and Spencer Sang, all of whom share a lasting gratitude for the life journey that she lived.
