Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, his son, Donald Jr. and his beloved wife of almost 70 years Shirley Ann. He is survived by his daughter, Jean (Matt); son, Walter (Tabitha); grandchildren, Travis, Jessica, Aaron, Kameron, and Karoline; and great-grandchildren, Eli, June and Audrey.
Don left West Virginia to join the U.S. Army. While enlisted, he was well-recognized, achieving the rank of sergeant. During his time in the Army, he served in the Korean Conflict. After his time in the Army was completed, he began what would be his career for the rest of his working days with Armour Foods. This part of his journey lasted 47 years until he retired. He achieved great success with the company, no doubt due to the way he progressed with them. He began as a truck loader and worked his way through the company’s different jobs until finally becoming Branch Manager.
Don was a proud member of the American Legion and the Elks. In his free time, Don loved to fish and was an avid walker and football fan.
Don loved his family and friends. With his easy-going personality, he was loved by all who met him. His kindness shined through. May he rest in peace in the company of the Lord and those who have gone before.
Visitation will be 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, 350 West Maple Avenue, Fayetteville, WV with services to follow. He will be laid to rest in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, WV.
The family wishes to thank Pearls of Life Memory Care (Lynchburg, VA) for the love and care Don was provided while he lived at their facility and especially at the end of his life.
