Yolanda Joyce Foster died on July 14, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. She was born on October 11, 1939 to Bertha and F. Ernest Parker. Yolanda grew up on the east side of Indianapolis with her parents, her sister, Caroline, and a revolving door of colorful women who were an integral part of her childhood. Aunts Edith, Fritzie, Babe, Peg and Johanna, and Grandmas Knoke and Parker provided a foundation of love and support that Yolanda always treasured.
Yolanda was a proud 1957 graduate of Thomas Carr Howe High School where she made lifelong friends and was named 1955’s Golden Girl, the “queen” of the annual Brown and Gold dance. Upon graduation, she worked for Indiana Bell.
In 1962, Yolanda married Avon Charles Foster, Jr. (Bud), whom she had known since seventh grade. They had two children, Bonnie Lynn and Paul David, raising them on Indianapolis’ south side and then in Springport, Indiana. Yolanda created a home where her children thrived, making sure there was supper on the table each evening, clean laundry and plenty of freedom and encouragement. Yolanda was the family facilitator: for the numerous camping and lake vacations, she packed (and unpacked) everything but the beer and the boat; for Christmas, she was responsible for each and every detail, starting her shopping for that favorite holiday in the spring.
Yolanda and Bud later moved to Orland, Indiana, where they became a part of the Lake Pleasant community. Yolanda enjoyed working at KB Toys, slow boat rides, the sun, and visits to Hap’s Tap and Tom’s Donuts. She most enjoyed it when her family and friends came up to visit. When Bud retired, they split their time between Lake Pleasant and Davenport, Florida, where they added to their list of dear friends.
Yolanda spent most of the last years of her life as a dedicated caregiver to Bud, her husband of 60 years, who suffered from Alzheimers and died in April. She is survived by her grandchildren who were her pride and joy- Andrew, Molly and Allison Foster- her daughter Bonnie Foster (Dave), her son Paul Foster (Tammy), her many nieces and nephews and friends she considered family. We will all miss her warmth, her optimism, and her love of a good game of Scrabble.
A service celebrating Yolanda’s life will take place on Monday, July 25, at 11:00 am at Geist Christian Church Mud Creek Campus, 8550 Mud Creek Rd. Indianapolis, 46256, with a lunch reception for all following. Cremation services by Little & Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove.
