Hello, my name is Madalynn Gardner and I’m 13, I would say Roger was like an uncle to me. Even though me and my family never got to see him much, we all loved him. He would usually maybe come by every 1 or 2 years to say “Hi” and hang out. We just can’t believe he’s gone.. and it was very hard on my dad, i’ve NEVER seen him cry before and on the day he found out I saw him cry for the first time in a while. We all miss him, I hope he’s doing well in heaven. ♥️

I met Roger at my first job, Michael's Arts & Crafts, 13 years ago. We became really close friends very quickly. He was so genuine and sincere, one of the few people I've met that fully engages you in conversation without any distraction. I've learned a lot from him over the years and always admired how ambitious he was. He was always working so hard to reach his goals and he seemed unstoppable. Anything he set his mind to he would achieve while still caring about his friends success and helping anyone he could. I could always rely on him to  be there even if it just meant taking a walk and talking about our crazy youth. He was always there to laugh and remind me life doesn't have to be so serious. I'll miss him very much, my family will miss him very much. Such a special person was taken too soon but im thankful to have ever known him. 

I met Roger at CLU and we hung out a lot upstairs in the history department with our other friends. He was one of the most nicest and funniest guys I have ever met. We're going to miss you!

I knew him only briefly at California Lutheran University.  He was warm, friendly, and a pleasure to be around.

May he rest in peace. 

One of the happiest and funniest individuals I had the pleasure of serving with. I met Sal at Ft Lewis in 2013, we was in the same fires platoon, and He quickly stood out as a go-to guy. He was both physically and mentally tough. He had a heart of gold, and one of those people whom you come across that would leave an impression on you for life. We kept in touch over the years, but his passing hit me like a brick. I'm still in shock. He was truly wonderful, He made the bad times better, always smiling and always laughing. I'll miss him. I'll miss him a lot. I feel sad that more people didnt get to know him. Bless his memory and his family. My condolences to all. Screaming Eagles Sal...

I an deeply saddened to learn I of Roger’s passing. I had the privilege to teach him at Cal Lutheran. He was kind-hearted, collegial, with a quiet determination. He also worked with my wife, and left a great impression on her. Roger will be greatly missed by the Nelson family. My prayers go out to his family members at this time of grief.
