Sister Barbara Helpert, C.V.I.

Sister Barbara graduated from Rosebud High School in 1937 and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, Houston, Texas, on October 24, 1940. She made final Profession of Vows on June 10, 1946.

Sister received her B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston and Masters in Education from Loyola University, New Orleans. She also attended the University of St. Thomas, Houston, and the University of Incarnate Word, San Antonio.

Her teaching ministry includes St. Joseph and Blessed Sacrament Schools, Houston; St. Michael’s, Burlington; St. James, Port Arthur. She taught mathematics and Business Administration at Incarnate Word Academy, Houston, for 32 years and also taught Religious Education classes in Baytown, Navasota, and New Waverly. She was Principal of Marian High School for two years and Moderator of the Incarnate Word Academy Alumnae about 38 years. It was rewarding and heart-warming for her to see the interest of the former students of the Academy in their Alma Mater.

Sister generously served the Congregation as Treasurer General for many years and Secretary General for some time. She is remembered especially for her kindness, patience, and willingness to help others. She loved her Congregation and her family and was looking forward to her family reunion on Sunday, June 9th.

Sister Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Helpert, Sr., brothers, and sisters. She is survived by her loving nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous good friends.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 9, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Incarnate Word Convent Chapel at 3400 Bradford Place, Houston, Texas, followed by the Wake Service. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at the convent Chapel on Monday, June 10, 2013 with Rev. Carl Belisch C.S.B., celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
