Donald Allen Morgan passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas, April 18, 2026, a day after the 72nd anniversary of his marriage to the late Mary Bernice Coon Morgan, the love of his life. Born September 9, 1932, in Port Arthur, Texas, to the late Robert Edward Morgan, Sr., and Cora Sherman Walker Morgan. He was raised in Bay City, Texas.
Donald improved the lives of thousands through his work as an orthodontist in Southwest Houston and, later, Kingwood. His children regularly meet other adults that remember him fondly as their orthodontist.
A lifelong Episcopalian, Don was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Houston since the fall of 1957, almost 70 years. During that time, he taught Sunday School, served on the Vestry for three three-year terms, was appointed Senior Warden three times, served as chairman of the annual pledge drive three times, and was chosen by the congregation to be a delegate to the Annual Diocesan Meeting three times. He was trained, licensed, and participated in church services as both a Lector and Lay Chalicer.
Don was a lover of music. In high school he sang in a barbershop quartet, The Straw Hat Cats. Years later he would lend his tenor voice to his church choir. As an instrumentalist he was very active in both his high school and college bands. He sat first-chair trombone for many years and was selected for the All-State Band in high school. He was active in Kappa Kappa Psi, a band service fraternity, and was president of the chapter at Sam Houston State Teachers College, later University, in 1953–54. In his late 70s, Don returned to the trombone and played for many years with the Kingwood College Big Band and Community Band under the direction of his friend, Jim Stubbs.
As a young child, he published his first “newspaper” on strips of colored paper using hand-stamped letters. He sold sodas from a stand and made “V” for victory buttons from the metal bottle caps as a boy during WWII. He organized the first student government at his high school, which he presided over his senior year. He had a strong drive to lead throughout his life. He served in numerous roles in professional organizations, including but not limited to President of the UTDB Orthodontic Alumni Association (1965-66), General Chairman of the Annual Meeting of the Southwestern Society of Orthodontists in 1978, Delegate to the House of Delegates of the American Association of Orthodontists, and President of both the Southwestern Society of Orthodontics and the Greater Houston Dental Society. Throughout his life, Don led with humility, humor, and purpose.
Donald is survived by his three children, Susan, Don Jr. (Betsy), and John (Amy); by his grandchildren, Jonathan, Caroline (Ian), Joshua (Amy), Andrew, and Abigail; great-grandchildren, Selah, Luca, Brennan, Kas, and Cy; by his sister, Cora Louise Morgan Jackson (James); by his
sisters-in-law Wanda Trembly Morgan and Pamela Fox Morgan; and by a host of loving nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; by his parents; and by his brothers Robert Edward Morgan, Jr., and Richard Dennis Morgan.
A visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2026, at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet St.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 3816 Bellaire Blvd. in Houston, Texas, on the 9th of May at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Creek Cemetery in Austonio, Texas.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers one consider donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, two organizations close to Donald’s heart.
