Ellen L. Kogen, born August 23, 1943, passed away April 11, 2011 from lung cancer and its complications. She was born in San Antonio and attended Tulane University. She was proud of the fact that she was one of only 3 women in the business school in 1963. It was at Tulane that she met and later married the love of her life, Barney Kogen. They spent 46 wonderful years together, raising a family and traveling the world. She was very pleased that she had visited all 7 continents and seen all of the major wonders of the world. Ellen never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew her. Ellen's generosity to charities especially those involving animals, was exceptional. Ellen loved her pets, which she referred to as her "Kritters". She told all that she met that her home was the happiest place on earth, her kitchen is where she could always be found. As a gourmet cook, she always kept her family and friends well fed and this was one of her greatest pleasures. Ellen was very happy that she had completed her "Bucket List". Ellen is survived by her husband, Barney; and son Frank. She was preceded in death by her son, Cary; daughter, Kelly; her mother and father, Sarah Jane and Frank Lichtenstein. Also surviving her, brothers Frank Lichtenstein and family and Lee Lichtenstein and family; as well as her extended family and friends, too numerous to mention.
A special "thank you" to the doctors and nurses at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Houston Hospice for all their guidance and support. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to "ARMADA CANCER RESEARCH FUND", c/o Daniel D. Karp, M.D., M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 301402, Unit 432, Houston, TX 77230-1402.
