Hazel Shields, a long-time resident of Houston and Pearland, TX, died Friday, June 19, 2015, at the age of 96. Although born in Bordelonville, LA, Hazel moved to the Big Easy where she met the love of her life, Arnold Wilson Shields, who was a young Army Air Force soldier. They married in 1942 and after WWII moved to Baton Rouge, LA, where their first daughter was born. Soon after, they moved to Palestine, TX where Arnold began his teaching career, and Hazel became a mother for the second time, this time with a son. In 1950 they moved to Houston where their third child was born. In 1951, Hazel returned to the workforce as a librarian at the Young Branch Library. Six years later, she was hired by Grocers Supply as a bookkeeper, until her retirement in 1982.
Hazel was raised in a very strong Louisiana Catholic family and raised her children in the Church. While in Houston she was active at Mount Carmel Catholic Church, and in Pearland she was active in the Women’s Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters, and the Super Seniors at St. Helen Catholic Church. She particularly enjoyed baking cakes for the Catholic Daughters’ projects. She loved card games, bus trips, and played Canasta and Tripoley regularly with her friends. Hazel was a strong lady who successfully lived independently in her Pearland home until she was 93. She then relocated to Trinity Oaks Senior Living facility in Pearland. Once her health declined, she moved back to Houston to St. Dominic Village, where she lost her struggle to overcome the ravages of time.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Arnold Wilson Shields; her parents Marcelin Clinton Bordelon and Marie Rose Couvillon Bordelon; and three siblings, Margaret Bordelon, Winton Joseph Bordelon, and LE Bordelon.
Hazel is survived by her large, loving family: her two daughters, Cheryl Ann Shields Davis of League City, Texas (husband Fred Lee Davis) and Gaynell Marie Shields Thompson of Kingwood, Texas; one son, Darryl Lynn Shields of Houston, Texas (wife Marlene Shields); seven grandchildren, Emily Katherine Shields, Patrick Arnold Shields, Suzanne Renee Shields McAndrew, Staci Lyn Davis Randolph, Casey Wilson Davis, Lindsey Marie Thompson Rinnan, and Chelsea Alexandra Thompson; and twelve great-grandchildren, Kenna Nicole Davis, Karley Danielle Davis, the twins Oakli Elizabeth Davis, Presley Ann Davis, Hannah Marie Randolph, Heidi Bree Randolph, James Henry Rinnan, Graham Boone McAndrew, the triplets Peyton Lynn Shields, Cooper Boyd Shields, Sydney Marie Shields, and Maeve Louise McAndrew (due June 30, 2015).
A Memorial Mass will be said on Thursday, June 25, at 10:00 at Warren Chapel on the campus of St. Dominic Village.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in her name to St. Dominic Village, 2401 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77021
