Bertram Culmer and Mary Catherine McHale. He was preceded in death by eight of his nine siblings:

As a student and graduate of St. Vincent de Paul school, Herman had a firm foundation in the Christian
faith and service to the church, especially altar service, which he performed even into his adult years. He
attended Marian High School for one year, after which he attended and graduated from Bellaire High
School. Thereafter, he attended the University of Houston.
Having lost his father at age six, Herman needed to help support his family and started working early in
life. He held a variety of jobs, including paper boy, grocery store worker, disc jockey, pharmacy delivery
boy, drug store manager, and manufacturer and seller of industrial coatings.
Herman made friends easily and had lifelong friends from different cultures. He loved children, animals,
and sports. Despite an obvious birth defect, he never considered himself “handicapped” and participated
in baseball, football, diving, handball, and other challenges, often turning those who would doubt or bully
him into friends.
