Linda was born and raised in Jackson, Michigan by her parents Gloria and Charles Cooper. When Linda was eight, her mother passed away. Her father later remarried Phyllis Cooper who raised Linda.
Linda attended Liberty University in Lynchburg VA and received a degree in business administration with a minor in linguistics in 1988. In her senior year she spent a semester serving with a team from Liberty in northwest Kenya Africa. Though it was a desert area, she was convinced that she could do that type of work the rest of her life. During that time, she learned the fundamentals of the tribal language (Turkana) and wrote a basic manual for future groups sent by the university. When she returned from Africa she attended the Urbana missions’ conference in Champaign, Il, and decided to dedicate her life to serving the Lord overseas.
In February of 1989 she went to Guatemala to work at a Christian high school where she taught English and became a spiritual mentor for young women. She met Sergio in Guatemala at a singles group from his church the 9th of April of 1989. They were good friends for a year, started dating in the fall of 1990 and were married December 28th, 1991, at Linda’s home church, Cascades Baptist Church in Jackson Michigan.
After being married, Linda and Sergio returned to Guatemala where Linda began to serve at Central American Theological Seminary (SETECA) in various capacities including writing grants to raise funds for the seminary´s projects, participating on different committees, supporting the student’s wives and others. In 2010 she earned a master’s degree in counseling from the seminary and began counseling in the Counseling Center and teaching classes. Linda also served in Guatemala creating Bible studies for ladies of her neighborhood and for 17 years organized a Christmas tea where she would prepare all kinds of American Christmas cookies and share her faith with the ladies that attended.
Linda and Sergio had two children, Derek and Christian. Linda was very involved with the boys continually taught them the disciplines and information of her Christian faith. While raising them she implemented many activities that became family traditions, such as singing Christmas carols every night from the 1st of December through Christmas Day. She also made special dinners and activities for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. These special holidays were always fun and left deep lessons in the lives of the boys.
Linda had a deep love for life, a very cheerful outlook, a contagious laugh, and an enchanting smile. Her beautiful blue eyes and smile seemed to bring light wherever she was and the people around her were influenced by her positive attitude. Linda had a special love for dogs, especially Schnauzers, and she trained them so well that they were welcomed everywhere she took them. Linda was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and often was invited to sing in church activities and other celebrations.
Linda is survived by her husband Sergio, their two children Derek and Christian. Her mother Phyllis Cooper, siblings Lenore and husband Robbie Opl, Betsy Dorton, Chuck and wife Pam, Ross and wife Laurie, Lonnie and Andrew Cooper, sixteen nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ministry of Sergio at the Central American Theological Seminary through Avant ministries.
