

Melvalene was born in Garrison, TX to Olin and Louell McIlwain on July 9, 1923. She attended Garrison High School in Garrison, TX and graduated in 1941. She was married in 1945 to the love of her life, Carl W. Cohen. They were married for 54 years. She and Carl created Studewood Food Market in the Heights and ran a successful business for many years. Melvalene was extremely active in Scouting, receiving their highest award, the Silver Beaver. Throughout the years, she was also active in politics, as a district election judge in Houston. She was always active in the PTA, serving as president and board member on various committees. Melvalene and Carl co-founded the Houston Heights Association in 1973. Melvalene also served on the Houston Arts Commission, and was instrumental in procuring the Lombard Lamp, which shines brightly on the Carl and Melvalene Cohen Plaza, located at 11th Street and Heights Boulevard.
Melvalene is survived by her son Danny and his wife Allison, and two grandchildren, Casey and Kylie, of Westport, CT. She is also survived by her son, Kevin Cohen. Additionally, she is survived by her sister MaryAnn Mewbourn of Lufkin, TX, and numerous loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl W. Cohen, her sister LaMerle Crump, her brother LaNeil McIlwain, and her infant son Monroe Jacob Cohen.
A private funeral service was held at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery.
