Sr. Rebecca was born to Michael Shannon and Bridget Sexton Shannon in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland in 1924. She was given the name Norah. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, TX, on April 23, 1939 at St. Michael Convent, Co. Clare, Ireland. Sr. Rebeccca consecrated her life to God by perpetual profession of vows on June 6, 1951 at Villa de Matel, Houston. A nurse by profession, Sister expressed her love and care for the sick in Catholic hospitals sponsored by the Congregation in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and California for over forty years. Her ministry in social justice for the poor was a special hallmark of her loving service of others. Sister loved to read, write poetry and listen to classical music. We are grateful for Sr. Rebecca’s gentleness and hospitality with all those whom she met; thank you, Sister Rebecca, for your loving witness of Christ to others.
Sr. Rebecca is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sr. Amelia, CCVI and three brothers. She is survived by her twin sister, Sr. Benedict, CCVI, and a brother, Msgr. P.P. Shannon in Australia, and many relatives. We extend special thanks to the staff at St. Placidus and St. Anne Convents for their care during Sister’s final years.
