He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Imogene Altenburger, and his brother Dennis Altenburger. He is survived by his brothers, Carl and Marc (Kate) as well as his sister Mary Ellen.
Bob grew up in an extended family that included many cousins that he grew up alongside. In 1959 he graduated from St. Thomas High School, then went on to graduate from the University of St. Thomas with a Bachelors in Mathematics and minors in Physics and Philosophy, as well as a masters degree from University of Houston.
Shortly after graduation he began a consulting career at NASA working on the programming for the Apollo Mission Simulator. He then went to work for Getty Oil managing the technical computer applications for the exploration and production division. In the early 1980s he went to work for Texaco Refining and Marketing (TRMI), where he worked until he retired in 1996. Bob was a dedicated farmer who could be found many weekends at his farm in Stoneham, Tx tending to his cattle and tomato garden. As much of a dedicated gardener as he was, he was an equally dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He treasured his time with each of his grandchildren at home or on the farm, and he made time to attend many of his grandchildren’s games, events and graduations over the years. He was proud of each of them. He knew no stranger and always welcomed people whom he met with a bright smile and warm handshake. His generosity to his church and to Catholic education was unwavering.
He cherished his friends from St. Thomas High School, often catching up with them at reunions and the annual Good Ole Boys Luncheon. He loved watching sports, including simulcast horse racing, all the Houston sports teams, particularly the Astros, and many college sporting events.
Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth (Betsy), children Michael (Ruth), Elizabeth Lane (Gary Don), Bill (Carrie); Grandchildren Mason Lane (Sandra), Travis Altenburger, Riley Lane, Rebekah Altenburger, Jake Altenburger, and Carley Altenburger; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
We are grateful to Houston Hospice and BrightStar Care for their compassion, commitment and care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Thomas High School 4500 Memorial Dr Houston, TX 77007
