He and Fe married in 1967 and raised two children, also named Sam and Fe. He played competitive basketball and worked as a photographer for the Philippine Herald. One of his assignments was the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California, which eventually set in motion for the family to move to the United States.
He lived in California, Texas, and Michigan. He worked for Fisher Body (a division of General Motors) in Michigan, the San Luis Hotel resort in Galveston and eventually retired from Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center. Everywhere he worked it was his goal to make everyone laugh and smile.
After retiring, he soon found himself bored. Sam does not stay bored for very long. He decided to teach himself magic, be a clown and make balloon animals. He joined what is now HAOM (Houston Association of Magicians) and loved to show his magic tricks to anyone and everyone. At times, he would sing while doing his magic. Sam also volunteered with the group to entertain children at hospitals. He always wanted to just make people happy or, at least, less unhappy. He once sat with a nervous patient at Memorial Hermann Hospital to help the patient regain calmness and peace of mind.
As someone who worked hard and never stopped learning, Sam passed these values down to his children and other family members. He loved family gatherings and Michigan family reunions.
Sam enjoyed living and was active at the YMCA, Senior Center, and bible study. He loved to fish especially on lakes in Michigan. His favorite activity was watching his grandson, Noah, play baseball. He attended almost every game for about 10 years and was nicknamed the Godfather of Westbury Little League.
Sam is preceded in death by his father Leopoldo, his mother Remedios and his brother Joseph. He is survived by his sister: Maria Diamond; his children Sam Camero and wife Elena, Fe Henning and husband John; 4 grandchildren August, Adeline, Tripp and Noah; and a niece, nephews, and cousins.
A special thank you to the staff at Houston Hospice who provided him comfort and peace in his final days.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Samuel’s memory may be made to Westbury Little League by clicking below under “Donations” section of this page. We know this is what he would have wanted. Westbury Little League was his home away from home where you would often see him wear a colorful hat and hear him shout, “Hit the ball, Noah!
