Born in Munich, Germany, to Rose and Morris Stal, the family sought a fresh start after the Holocaust and relocated to the suburbs of Chicago. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Sam earned his Doctorate of Medicine at Loyola University outside of Chicago. He completed post-graduate training programs in Chicago, Houston, and France, where he became board-certified in both otolaryngology and plastic surgery. His hard work and dedication earned him full professorship in the Department of Surgery and the position of Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, where he practiced for over 30 years.
Sam’s two great passions were teaching medicine and helping children with craniofacial, cleft lip and palate deformities. His focus on helping children led to his founding of the TCH Center for Facial Surgery, whose objective was the treatment children regardless of their financial status. He also loved coaching others through their formative years and serving as a mentor for countless residents, fellows and physicians over the years.
Sam is survived by his wife Linda; sons David, Drew, and Brian; his siblings Aaron and Helen; and his father Morris. He also leaves behind a multitude of friends, colleagues, and students who all played very important roles in his life.
A memorial celebration of his life has been scheduled for 3:00 PM, Wednesday, August 15th at the Levy Funeral Home located at 4525 Bissonnet. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to Texas Children’s Hospital – Plastic Surgery Division.
