Sr. Gertrude was born in 1929 to Cornelius and Kate O’Mahony Murphy in Newcestown, Co. Cork, Ireland. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, TX, on October 7, 1948 at St. Michael Convent, Co. Clare, Ireland. Sister consecrated her life to God through Profession of Perpetual Vows on August 15, 1956 at Villa de Matel, Houston.
Sister Gertrude earned a B.S. in nursing from Sacred Heart Dominican College in Houston. As a professional nurse, Sister gave excellent and compassionate care to the sick as a nursing supervisor at some of the congregation’s sponsored facilities including: St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, TX; St. Michael Hospital, Texarkana, AR; St. Mary’s Hospital, Galveston, TX; Carrigoran House, Ireland. She also served at St. Frances Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sr. Gertrude ministered as a patient representative in the USA before dedicating her time to prayer in Marian Convent at Villa de Matel. Throughout Sister’s life of ministry, she expressed a deep love of God and her neighbor and was privileged to serve those in need.
Sr. Gertrude is survived by two sisters: Sr. Nora Christina, her twin, and Sr. Mary Damian, both CCVIs; and one brother, Con Murphy of Ireland, and many nieces and nephews.

Sister Gertrude’s body will be received at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel, 6510 Lawndale St., Houston, TX at 5:00 P.M. on Friday, August 17, 2018, followed by Evening Praise and a celebration of her life. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 18, 2018. The Rite of committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.
