Though he grew up in Hamburg, NY, Theodore Owen Webber took easily to Texas life, marrying a native Houstonian, becoming an avid Astros fan and, later, taking up square dancing.
Ted, born July 1, 1940, passed away surrounded by family on April 16, 2026.
He was a pastor’s kid, a boy with three sisters born to Fred and Carol Webber in Auburn, NY. After graduating from Hamburg (NY) High School, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years where he sang in the chorus, and learned to hurry up and wait and to play the bugle.
In 1963, Ted enrolled at Trinity University in San Antonio where he met Dana, his wife of 61 years. They were married in 1964, and Ted finished his degree in history at the University of Houston in 1968.
By day, for 33 years Ted was an auditor for CNA Insurance. By late afternoon he changed to baseball coach for the teams of his two sons, Blake and Dan. He enjoyed all sports, was a golfer, baseball umpire and basketball official. He often was home in time to enjoy a competitive round of Jeopardy on TV before dinner, then up early to meet friends for morning coffee.
Ted retired in 2008 and became an enrolled agent working seasonally for H&R Block from 2011-2024. He and Dana joined the Hey Lollies Square Dance Club in 2012, where they served on several committees and enjoyed their favorite square dancing along with country-western, ballroom and round dancing.
For those years Ted and Dana were fixtures at the sporting events of their three granddaughters. They also loved camping with friends, taking a few cruises and traveling to Webber family and Iowa-cousin reunions. Ted could often be found in his recliner with a cat on his lap and Kindle in his hand, on a geocaching adventure, playing cards with friends or rooting for the UH men’s basketball team.
Ted is survived by his wife Dana, son Blake, son Dan and daughter-in-law Diane, and grandchildren Grace, Samantha and Lily. He was preceded in death by his sister Chris Tills, and is survived by sisters Bea Haskins and Dolores McLean, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will take place at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home on Saturday, April 25th from 4:00 to 5:30 PM.
