Sara was born March 19,1942, in Minneapolis, MN, and died December 9, 2019, in St. Louis, MO, of natural causes after a short illness. She was, as her daughter-in-law described her, a Force of Nature. Sara saw herself as one of eight billion people on earth, all beloved by God. She was a human being and she cared for all of nature, including all creatures. Sara was a feminist and she cared for people of all colors and races, and even for men. She was straight and she cared for people of all sexualities. She was a Protestant Episcopalian and she cared for people of all faiths and of no faith. Sara was an ardent lay person and she tolerated even clergy.
Sara loved to share her gifts of guitar and vocal music, quilting, gardening, study, teaching and preaching and philanthropy with family, friends and strangers. Sara graduated from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD, in 1964 and from the University of Notre Dame in 1988 with a Masters in Theology (Biblical Studies). In 1964-66 she was a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia. She was an Education for Ministry Mentor and a Lay Preacher, as well as Chair of the Commission on Ministry and Total Ministry Coordinator for the Diocese of Western Michigan.
In Grand Rapids she worked at Old Kent Bank computing center, Coldwell Banker Realty and Community Counseling. She loved singing in the Grand Rapids Women’s Chorus.
She is predeceased by her parents Andrew and Catherine Hobart and brother Peter Hobart. Sara is survived by her husband of almost 52 years Charles Homeyer, son Peter (Lynne), daughter Marti Thomas (John) and grandchildren Samantha, John and Sara Rachel Thomas, and Jose Rodriguez.
A memorial service with Holy Eucharist will be celebrated for Sara on December 28 at 11am at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at 5333 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming, MI 49509, preceded by a visitation at 10am followed by a luncheon.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to one or more of the Cathedral of St. Andrew Outreach (clothing bank), the Girls Choral Academy of Grand Rapids, or Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
