The granddaughter of Welsh immigrants brought to Utah by the LDS Church, Beverly was proud to be a coal miner’s daughter. Her humble beginnings in a small town of residents from around the world taught her to value diversity, family, community and her religion, as well as develop a strong work ethic and a commitment to education, social justice, labor rights and the environment.
Beverly graduated from Carbon High School in Price, Utah in 1943 and earned a B.A degree in Education from (then) Utah State Agricultural College in 1948. She and Don married in Logan, Utah on August 14, 1948. Don’s career, primarily with the US Forest Service, allowed them to live in a wide variety of places including Shiprock and Farmington, NM; Prineville, Paulina and Corvallis, OR; and Okanogan, WA. They moved to Newport Hills in Bellevue, WA in 1970. After Don’s retirement in 1980, they travelled extensively in and out of the country. Beverly moved to Mercer Island in 2007.
Beverly was a 44 year active member at Newport Presbyterian in Bellevue; an elementary, special education and ESL teacher; member of Pi Beta Phi women’s fraternity; Mariners, Seahawk and Cougar fan; and served many years as a docent at the Museum of History and Industry. She was a strong-willed, independent woman with a sharp sense of humor; penchant for storytelling, advice giving and teasing; great sense of adventure; thirst for learning and compassion for children and animals. But most importantly Beverly had a deep devotion to, and love for her family. She gave generously to various charities; her passions in life were raising and teaching children and travelling.
