Religion was very important to Clarice. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church of Bellevue. Music was also a very significant part of Clarice’s life. At the age of eleven, she debuted in her long career as a church organist. She played theater organ for the WOWO radio station in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the 1930s. Clarice taught piano and organ for about twenty years. She frequently entertained family and friends with stirring renditions ranging from ragtime, to hymns, to pop favorites of the time. Clarice was a visual artist as well. She was accomplished in both china and oil painting. Writing was another life-long interest, and she took self-study courses in creative writing. Her other hobbies included cooking, gardening, and sewing. Clarice also had technical interests. As amateur radio operator WN9JIX, she made her first contact in Morse code with a ham in Tasmania! Beginning in her 70s, Clarice learned how to operate a personal computer. Clarice worked as the bookkeeper for her husband’s veterinary clinic and was the manager of the family’s coin operated laundry business. For nearly forty years Clarice studied investing and successfully managed her stock portfolio.
