Born Sept. 15, 1930 Passed on May 13, 2013
Harley H. Hoppe, relentless advocate for taxpayers and champion of numerous conservative causes, passed away peacefully in his sleep May 13, 2013.
Harley was born in Hamilton Montana and spent his youth in Eastern Washington.
He graduated from Willamette University in 1952.
After teaching briefly, Harley was hired as a regional sales representative for Texaco. He met and married Teresa DeLorenzo in 1957.
Shortly thereafter, Harley founded Overtaxed, Inc. an organization that successfully challenged increases in the gas tax.
His involvement in political movements led him to run for King County Assessor, where he served 3 terms. During that time, he made an unsuccessful bid for Governor of Washington State.
After leaving public life, Harley founded Harley H. Hoppe & Associates, a property tax consultation and appeal business.
Upon retirement, Harley continued his taxpayer advocacy by founding, We the People Will, dedicated to limited government, lower taxes and government accountability.
Harley’s love of horses led to ownership and racing at both Longacres and Emerald Downs. His fondness for flowers and generous spirit brightened the lives of family, friends and strangers alike.
Harley is survived by Teresa, wife of 55 years, 3 daughters, Elizabeth, Amy (Ty Henderson, husband) and Susan, and 3 grandchildren – Justelle, Brayden and Alia, and half sister Rosemary Andrews.
