Born in Evanston Illinois to German immigrants, Lillian Herter and Joseph Henning, Harry was blessed with the gift of gap. Harry never knew a stranger and had a fondness for yearly travel to Michigan to join his cousins, Ron, and Anna Shelton on their apple orchard. During WW2 as a first Generation American, Harry served in the US Navy on the USS Randall in the South Pacific. Harry completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Colorado at the University of Denver where he met Briony J. Travers his first and only wife. Together they produced five children: Melissa C Smith (Marlin M); Charles B Herter; Jarrah E. Paschall (Scott); David R. Herter and Justin S. Herter (Ginger), four grandchildren; Thomas J. Smith, Alexander J. Smith, Levi J. Smith, William Paschall and one great grandchild; Sayuri K Smith. Harry dedicated his life to serving others, including providing for the healthcare needs of his wife Briony and good friends Ruth and Edith. He enjoyed a good beer, cheese and crackers, bowling, and watching Johnny Carson on TV.
Harry is preceded in death by his mother Lillian, Father Joseph, son Charles and son-in-law Marlin. Harry’s smile and dry sense of German humor will be missed. A special thanks go out to Carlee and Tima who provided decades of love and attention to caring for Harry through the good and bad times of his long life.
