She met the love of her life Rich Snyder in 1979 and they wed 2 years later. Jeanne's entire life was spent helping others. She first joined King County Association of Retarded Citizens and eventually became the Assistant Director. She then took time to raise a family of two boys. When they were old enough, she went back to school and earned a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Washington and a second Masters Degree from Seattle University in Counseling. She then opened a private practice to deal with family and individuals who had suffered severe trauma. She was a pioneer in the process of using EMDR to help trauma victims. EMDR was initially treated as quack science by mainstream psychologists and psychiatrists. Jeanne and others persevered and proved all the doubters wrong. This culminated with Jeanne being invited by the U.S. Army to Fort Lewis to help train their personnel in how to use EMDR to treat soldiers suffering traumas in Iraq. Jeanne of course refused to take any money for her time and efforts saying only she couldn't take money "to help the boys." She remained in private practice for 25 years treating some of the most severe trauma victims of car accidents, accidental shootings and domestic abuse. She retired in 2015. She fought a 14-year battle with cancer that she beat twice, but the third time she did not. She used to say her father who started in the 1800's as an indentured servant and became a well-known Washington labor leader, and her mother who was raised in a large family in the Dakotas on a farm during the depression, were the strongest people she ever knew. But her 14-year battle with cancer proved that she was their child. She conducted herself with strength and dignity throughout her ordeal.
Jeanne is survived by her husband Rich Snyder of 42 years and her sons Travis and Zach (Kelly).
A celebration of life will be held at Sunset Hills Memorial Park and Funeral Home on Thursday April 13 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Jeanne's name to the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle.
