Born on March 18, 1934, in Dickinson, South Dakota, Joe was the son of Tom and Anna (Froelich) Mischel. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Joe relocated to Seattle, Washington, in the 1950s.
In 1960, Joe began his career at Boeing, initially working on the Minute Man ICBM program. He was eventually promoted to the AWACS program, where he remained until his retirement in 1996.
Joe and Fran married on July 1, 1960, raising their family in Bellevue, Washington. He was a devoted father to his three sons, David, James, and Stephen, and took great pride in their lives and accomplishments.
Joe had a deep love for the outdoors and treasured family camping trips, especially to Mora Campground in Olympic National Park. He was known for his practical skills and generosity, always willing to lend a hand to neighbors with household projects. Joe found joy in small things, including cheering on his sons in Cub Scouts pinewood derbies, and doting on his beloved dog, Spanky, named after a character from Our Gang.
Faith played a central role in Joe’s life. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Louise Catholic Church in Bellevue, and after relocating to Edmonds, Washington, with Fran to be closer to their son James and family, he attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Joe is survived by his wife, Frances; sons David (wife Ruth), James (wife Debbie), and Stephen (wife Lenox); grandchildren Alex, Dylan, Jacqueline, Jessica, and Juliette; great-grandchildren Coleman, Feyre, Johanna, and Lincoln; and his brother Peter in Spearfish, North Dakota. He was predeceased by his sister Vicky and brother Fred.
The family offers special thanks to Ruth, David’s wife, for her devoted care of Joe during his final years at their home near Salem, Oregon.
Joe will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to his family.
A memorial service celebrating Joe’s life will be held at St. Louise Catholic Church in Bellevue, Washington, on May 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Joe’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
