

Captain USCG retired Leo Nicholas “Nick” Schowengerdt Jr., age 72, died peacefully in his Bellevue home on Thursday, January 20, 2011, surrounded and comforted by his children. Nick was born on September 24, 1938, in San Diego, California.
As a teen, Nick was a member of the Sea Scouts instilling a life-long love of the sea, culminating in 30 years of service in the United States Coast Guard and 10 years with Holland-America Line. Nick attended Point Loma High School, in San Diego, and attended the Coast Guard Academy graduating with a degree in Engineering. Later in life, he earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from George Washington University.
Nick married his childhood sweetheart, Jane Elizabeth Chapman, in 1960, and together they had three children: Leo, Karen, and Brian. The family made their home in various locations depending on where Nick was stationed, with favorites being Hawaii and Maine.
Nick was an accomplished musician, starting a jazz band called the Nitecaps while at the Academy that just celebrated their 50th anniversary, honoring Nick as its founder. Nick was also a world traveler, artist, computer guru, and gourmet chef. His career was varied and unique, including being a consultant to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Director of the National Narcotics Border Interdiction staff/ Assistant to the Vice President, and Director of Policy and Plans at Holland-America Line.
Most importantly, Nick was a devoted and loving father and husband; generous to a fault. His beloved wife, Jane, died in 2001. He is survived by his children Leo N. Schowengerdt IV, Karen (Lee) Burdick, Brian (Verena) Schowengerdt-Kuzmany, grandchildren Daniel (Kari) Burdick and Sarah (Jordan) Tucker, great-grandchild Penelope Burdick, and sister Marilyn Nix Smoler.
A memorial service to celebrate Nick’s life will be held at Sunset Hills Funeral Home, 1215 145th Place SE, Bellevue, WA 98007, on Saturday, January 29, 2011, at 1:30 p.m., followed by the burial service. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at both Pacific Medical Centers and Virginia Mason Hospital for all their help, and especially the Providence Hospice staff.
