My wife, Ling-Ing, was the most beautiful person I’ve known both in body and soul. I am lucky she had been my wife, my friend and soul mate for the last 19 years. She was compassionate, loving, and sweet.
Her kidneys had failed 17 years ago. Her mother showed the most selfless act of love and gave her one of her kidneys to save her life and give us the most precious miracle gift of all – our son David. It gave Ling-Ing the courage to live on. She poured out her heart and soul to raise David into a decent, caring and outstanding young man.
About 9 years ago, her transplanted kidney failed. She developed lymphoma on her spine and became completely paralyzed in her legs. She never gave up. She vowed to be able to walk again. Three months later, she was up on her feet walking around again. She constantly suffered from excruciating pain from her damaged spinal cord but she rarely complained.
She had always put family before her. In her final 7 weeks at the hospital, I witnessed her strong will to survive, to get better and wanting to go home. But she never forgot to ask how her son David was doing every day. When she was afraid, I held her and comforted her. But if it was getting late, I just had to tell her David was waiting for me to take him home. She would immediately let me go home no matter how scared she was.
She put up a good fight the entire time and never gave up. Ultimately she lost her battle and succumbed to the infection.
