Pat was born on April 25, 1942 in Wichita, Kansas where she spent the first 17 years of her life. She was baptized at the Hillside Christian Church in Wichita. Her parents were Gene and Phyllis Akin. Pat’s grandmother and grandfather Burgess (Velda & James), aunt and uncle Burgess (Jean & James), and cousins (James, Judy, and Jeff Burgess) were the center of her life. She grew particularly close to her Grandmother Burgess and her cousins, especially Judy Burgess.
Pat attended Wichita East High School, through her junior year until Gene’s career with Boeing transferred them to Seattle. Pat attended Highline High School in Burien for her senior year and was graduated in 1960. She attended the University of Washington for one year. She transferred to Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon for her final three years where she enjoyed smaller class sizes and more intimate campus. She was a member of the Theta Nu Alpha sorority. At Pacific, she earned a full ride scholarship in the Speech Department for the Debate Team. She was graduated with a BA in Speech/Speech Pathology from Pacific University.
After graduation, Pat started her own speech therapy business in Seattle, specializing in helping children with speech impediments. Two years later, in 1966, Pat met Jerry Koenig. They fell in love and were married in the Lake Burien Presbyterian Church on December 30, 1967. They wanted to start a family, but before they did, they decided to travel. Jerry found a position with General Electric which fit their plans as it involved various transfers around the country. The last transfer was to Phoenix where they decided to start a family. On March 17, 1970 they had a beautiful baby daughter, Tiffany.
After a year and a half in Phoenix, it became apparent that their love of the ocean and the mountains was becoming more and more important. They decided to move back to the Pacific Northwest with a short stay in Portland and then finally to Seattle.
When Tiffany was five, and starting preschool, Pat started looking for a job that would allow her the flexibility to be at home whenever Tiff was out of school. She found that residential real estate fit those requirements, and her superb ability to connect and work with people. Pat had a successful career in real estate for 30 years.
In 1996 Tiffany married John Ostolaza. A few years later they gave Pat and Jerry two beautiful grandsons, Sean and Evan. Pat was forever thankful that Tiffany, John, Sean, and Evan continued to reside in the Seattle area.
During the last ten years of her life, Pat’s health degraded. During a critical stay on Overlake Medical center, Pat passed away in the intensive care unit on the 6th of September 2012 with Jerry and Tiffany at her side.
