He began a 25 year career at Pacific Northwest Bell where he held a variety of management positions until retirement as a director in 1990. Volunteer service was an important part of Bill's life. He was chairman of Pacific Northwest Yolkfellows assisting ex prisoners. He served on the local and regional boards of Childrens Home Society. In 1978 Bill and his wife started the first Western Wa. Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, a non-profit support group for bereaved parents and siblings. He went on to become National President and offered workshops across the U.S. on Men's grief which was little understand at the time. He served as mayor of Bothell for two years. Bill was a people person and will also be remembered for his sense of humor and dedication to his family. In later years he became "Paba", setting up stages for kids plays, biking, playing games, reading with and nurturing his three grandchildren.

Bill is preceded in death by his son David who died of leukemia in 1978. He leaves his wife Barbara, he described as his best friend, a daughter Bethany King, son in law Frederick King, three grandchildren: Patrick, William and Sophia.
