Wynn's smile and warm welcome would be my first memory from our attending Kirkland Nazarene. Then you, Marj, coming quietly behind to extend your greeting. What a great looking couple! As time past, we became extended family with your son and our daughter marrying in 1990. Wynn loved his family and always had enthusiasm no matter his immediate circumstance - sharing about his Lord, his family, politics, finding a song that would be "just right" for a quartet. One of my first memories of Wynn Cannon was as my Sunday school teacher. He would greet us each Sunday morning as we arrived for class with a huge smile and the words "Happy to see you this wonderful morning". He taught us that God loved us, had sent his Son to die in our place, and had a purpose for each one of our lives.

Mr. Cannon taught us that the most important decision we would ever make was giving our lives to Jesus Christ. The second lesson was we all had value. Each one of us had gifts, and how we used those gifts could change lives. Each of us had an opinion that mattered.  In fact many times class wasn't dismissed until 'all' had shared, no matter how much or how little we actually said. Mr. Cannon taught self-worth. He was one of those people who made a difference in your life.

Years went by. Mr. Cannon made more impressions. He had the most wonderful laugh. If he got tickled over something, the giggles would set the entire room off. His laugh was truly contagious. He was quick witted, and kept one on their toes.  He loved to sing. He sang from his Love for his God, and my spirit was always lighter by the time the song had ended. A solo on Sunday morning was a special treat indeed. Mr. Wynn Cannon brightened the room just by being in it.

More years passed."Mr. C" (he was given a less formal title) became part of my extended family when my sister married his oldest son Todd. I have enjoyed many hours of memory making sharing family events. The birth of each of my 4 nephews was cause for Mr. C to inform everyone he saw that he was new grandpa. He cherished that title just as much as he did "Husband", and "Father".  
      
I am a witness to his commitment to his family. His steadfast faithfulness to his wife, his unending support and encouragement to his three children in whatever endeavors they pursue. His 'inner child' kept alive and well in the interaction with his grandsons. These are the other facets that make up Wynn Cannon.

Tomorrow, I will sit with family and listen as others share their stories of how their lives were touch by this awesome man. We will cry... laugh...sing favorite songs, and unite in celebrating the life of Wynn Cannon.  Mr. C, I look forward to seeing again.

Since the earliest time I can remember, Wynn Cannon was my faorite uncle. No matter what was happenning Wynn was always ready to make others smile and laugh. He wanted to enjoy every moment of this life, and he wanted all of us to enjoy it with him. Many have listed the traits that made him so special in each of our lives. Be he a husband, father, brother,
sister, uncle, or any number of activities he was involved in. If you knew Wynn, you remember Wynn. We each have been so blessed to have had the opportunity to know him personnally. And as time passes we will remember the wonderful moments we shared. He was a great example to to us, and was always ready to help others find their way in life, and to share his love of God. Now he's gone from us and we are left with a hole in our hearts. Time will make our loss less painful but we will not forget how he touched our lives. Thanks Wynn, For being who you were to me. Your nephew, Frosty.

On a still September day in 1944, in Weiser , Idaho, Wynn Cannon and I walked home for lunch. We did not know each other, so the hike together was fortuitous. We found that we lived across the alley from one another and that the daily noon lunch hike became almost a ritual. He was a handsome, athletic-looking lad, and we discovered a mutual interest in anything involving running, jumping, throwing, catching (he preferred a round ball, I an oblate spheroid); in short, we were companionably competitive. We had several classes together, including mixed chorus and business principles, and although he did not date or dance, most of the school activities found us participating. Possessor of a superb tenor voice, he was cast as Cowboy Bob in our senior operetta, "Oh, Doctor." He was a good, reliable halfback, and his hands never betrayed him. If a pass was close, he would get it and hang onto the ball. His presence made the team better than average and gave us a victory over Vale, something important to Weiser fans but perhaps of littleconsequence in the light of eternity. He shone on the basketball court, by far the superior player on the squad and one of the best in the conference, the district, and the state. His basketball skills, like his dialect, were honed by the Midwest, and sometimes both were difficult for us. When one day before a class he asked if I would borrow him a pencil, my puzzled reply was, "From whom?" I wondered why he would borrow a pencil from someone else when I would have been perfectly willing to lend him one, as I thought he surely knew. The problem was dialect: where we would have used "loan" or "lend," his North Dakota language sense required "borrow." We became good friends, and track and field were a common endeavor for us. He turned out to be a pretty good high jumper, and we both went to the state meet. More than that, we both liked to hunt. He was somewhat surprised to learn that the Weiser River Valley, Mann's Creek, Monroe Creek, Jenkins Creek, and other valleys were superb pheasant hatcheries. His 12- gauge was a formidable weapon. With 32- inch barrels, his old shotgun was made of twist or Damascus steel and could accommodate only low-base shells. Even with the lighter load of gunpowder which his old double barrel demanded, he was a formidable shot, and his mother worked magic with the meat he brought home in great quantities. Evenings after supper--dinner to city folk--it was common for Rev. Cannon to gather children and guests around the piano for hymn singing. Fern was often the pianist, and what music filled that two-story house. In the course of time, Winnie-as we called him--and I enlisted in the navy. We thought (our birthdays were only five days apart) we should exercise our autonomy where and while we could, rather than be drafted. So it was an August enlistment, a period of waiting for active duty to begin, and then a trip to the USNTC (United States Naval Training Center) for boot camp. We were in the same company and the same platoon in that company. Our company commander was a hawk-nosed ex-All-American high hurdler named John Biewener from USC, and we got along fairly well. After boot camp, we whiled away the days at Camp Shoemaker, at Treasure Island, and went aboard the USS New Jersey in San Francisco Bay on Feb. 10, 1946. Winnie was assigned to FA Division, I went to the L Division. Subsequently, I transferred to the FA Division, and it was not long before First Winnie and then I took the examinations for a promotion from Seaman second class to Seaman first class. We got our promotions and the $10 or so per month salary increase. The FA Division had the responsibility for the care and firing of the five inch batteries. That included their aiming and firing and also the care and maintenance of the sights. The days at sea around Catalina Island and San Clemente were pleasant . . . a smooth sea, clear blue skies, an orchestra on the fantail playing the popular ballads and dance music, good food, and ho hostilities. Winnie and I, you may recall, enlisted in the V-6 program: we signed up for the duration of the war and six months thereafter. You may recall that hostilities ended about the middle of August; peace was declared about the end of the following December. We left Long Beach and sailed up to Bremerton where we were discharged early in August. Winnie stayed in Seattle; I returned to Idaho, matriculated at the college where I taught for nearly 40 years. From time to time--class reunions, professional meetings that took me to Seattle, and the like--Winnie and I could get together. We wrote , talked on the phone, Margie came with him to Weiser for our 50th h. s. reunion. It was a pleasant, harmonious, and rewarding friendship, and I shall miss him. Sincerely, Louie Attebery

Dear Marjorie and Family: 

I've spent the last several days thinking before I started to write about my thoughts, recollections and feelings for and about Wynn.  I first met Wynn in approximately 1983 as a result of being a co-investor in Bear Creek Golf Course.  At that time the Bear Creek “project,” was just an idea of 19 partners of various ages with 19 different sets of priorities and goals.  As everyone who knew Wynn will know, Wynn immediately stood out due to his professional appearance, presentation, obvious business experience and logical thinking.  So began a long running friendship that grew far beyond our involvement together in Bear Creek.  

It is impossible though to speak about my knowledge of and friendship with Wynn without mentioning a bit more about Bear Creek.  Wynn and I served for nine years on the Board of Bear Creek and on several Committees together.  I found Wynn to be a man of clear vision and understanding of the business issues and problems. Wynn was always focused on finding the solutions to any business problems. He always acted as a gentleman and never gave an appearance of being better or above any of the other partners.  Wynn's input to Bear Creek was absolutely critical to its success, including finding a major buyer to purchase Bear Creek when the partners decided to sell.  He took it upon himself to head up the Committee to search for potential buyers and negotiated a sales price substantially in excess of any previous offer we had received.  

With Wynn integrity came first.  His integrity was real, not just talk; it came above all other interests, including his own possible personal financial gain.  I have never known a man with more integrity.  In his countenance Wynn always demonstrated grace, especially grace under pressure.  Even though I am 17 years younger than Wynn, he never projected anything to me other than being equals, both personally and in business dealings.   

Our friendship started at Bear Creek grew into many other areas.  Wynn loved a good joke and a good laugh.  We had many of them, often related to politics.  He loved politics and being involved in the political arena.  After he retired from his business interests, Wynn got hip deep in the initiative process in Washington State in an attempt to force taxes to be reduced.  He knew that unchecked taxation would eventually take away our freedom.  I spent time collecting signatures for many of his state tax initiatives.  I was not always just standing around waiting for him to call me to help on another initiative.  However, like most of his political friends I couldn't resist his requests for help.  Wynn was a political force of nature and that made it nearly impossible not to want to help him.  You just could not turn him down.  When he made up his mind to attack a political issue it was always clearly thought out and had sound reasoning behind it.  Only then did he jump in – up to his neck.  He often told me that he was having FUN pushing his tax initiatives and ruffling the political feathers in Olympia.  And it was easy to see that he was having fun, even though he worked much harder than anyone else on tax initiative issues.  

I have come to believe that the reflection of man and his wife is reflected in the lives of their children after they become adults themselves.  Dawn, Todd and Clark have all become successful, stable adults with successful families of their own.  I am not singling out any of their children, but choose to use Clark and Jill only as an example.  Serious illness hit Jill Cannon in the first year of their marriage, which has continued for many years until today.  Clark was, like Dawn and Todd, raised with a true sense and understanding of what commitment really means.  He has shown that he understands that marriage truly is a “for better or for worse” deal.  Clark's example of love and care for Jill speaks loudly to all who know them.  I believe that it is impossible to have this kind of commitment and love if it has not been exhibited and taught by one's parents.  I find it no accident that the depth of love and commitment that each of Wynn and Marjorie's children show for their own spouses and children shines through so brightly that it cannot be missed by all who know them.  These learned life lessons and the strength to succeed through all of life's circumstances can only come from the love and strength shown to them by Wynn and Marjorie as they grew up.  Life lessons like understanding what faith in God really means, what honesty and integrity look like, what being a good person means and what true friendship is.  Therefore, I confidently declare that the truest reflection of Wynn and Marjorie is seen in their children and grandchildren.   That reflection is his legacy.  From many conversations with Wynn, I know for a fact that legacy was far more important to him than any business success or any other type of success in his own life.  

I would like to speak a bit of Wynn's love – first his love for Marjorie and then for his kids and grandkids.  Wynn loved his family completely and above all else here on earth.  Much of that love is indicated in what I've already said above.  In addition, Wynn truly loved God.  Wynn was not a double minded man in his love for God.  He made no secret of that love for God.  He did not crassly push it on people or brandish it about, but he also “did not hide his light under a basket.”  Since Wynn and I have a similar love for God, it is not surprising that we had many discussions about it over the years.  I know we both prayed for each other and our families through various family illnesses and other worldly challenges.  I know from a distance of his love for his Church, his friends from Church, his love of Christian music, etc.  God was central in his life.  Therefore, I am quite confident that Wynn not only ran, but successfully finished “the good race.”  His family and friends know for a fact that he is now with his Lord in Heaven. 

Wynn, now for a few personal thoughts that I hope God will pass on to you:  I've known you for a long time Wynn, nearly 30 years.  Over that time friendship grew to love.  I count it a blessing that I've known you and been your friend.  You were a good friend to me in both good and hard times.  I plan on walking with you one day  in Heaven, probably around the golf course you are playing on right now.  I miss you Wynn, but I am happy for you now.   I look forward with assurance to seeing you again.  

Wynn, Pat and I pray now for peace for Marjorie and all your family members.  We pray that Jesus sidles up next to each of them in moments of grief and that He soothes their grief with all the good memories of times spent with you and also with the sure knowledge that they will be with you again in Heaven.  I trust that all your family members are getting a lot of comforting and uplifting stories from many of the people who knew and loved you, Wynn.  I would truly be surprised to hear anything else.

Very sorry to hear of Wynn's passing but I know he is with his Lord.  He was a friend for over 35 years.

I am so sorry for this loss, for all of us.  I loved Wynn and our rousing political talks and will miss him dearly.

We had heard of your father's passing and our hearts go out to your Mom, and to all of the family. I know it will be a great tribute to him in celebration of a life well lived.

 Great memorable event commenced in 1953 in Wenatchee, WA. 
 I, at the time, Gertie Olson and Wynn`s sister, Lorraine, decided 
on an adventurous move to Seattle from our banking jobs in Denver.   

 Wynn and Marjorie volunteered (?) in the pursuit of an apartment and settling in of two young excited girls. 

 At this time Wynn was an announcer at the radio station there. 
 One evening while visiting in their home, probably enjoying Wynn`s superb home made root beer.  The drapes being open and Wynn performing his entertaining antics, he suddenly 
jumped up and closed the drapes and reopened them and took a bow for the neighbors across the street.  This charade continued for quite some time while Lorraine and I were hysterical with laughter.  

 Just an example of the joyous, hospitable, caring nature of Wynn and Marjorie.  My story has been related to our six children and their families all these years.  What a wonderful 
humorous man!  I will never forget him.

In memory of our brother, Wynn Cannon, a short message, that we loved him dearly. 
When we would chat on our many phone conversations they were much the same. 
How is all of the family doing? How are Marg, Dawn and Rick, Diane and Todd and 
the Boys, and Cark and Jill? Then, proceeded to his own health and doctor appointments. 
We never knew him be sick, and He would let us know in a fun loving way he could not 
spell hospital or doctor until he was 80 years of age. 
 
I talked with him on March 3rd or so, and he reminded me that we are promised three score years and ten, since I've passed that, I'm ready for Heaven.
 
I would love to share my favorite jokes with him (silly jokes) and he would laugh until he could hardly breathe.
 
We travelled with Marge and Wynn often and never had a dull moment. He was a wonderful loving brother.

Wynn Cannon, a brother-law, yes but far more. He was of my personal dear friend, who added so much to my life. He sang at our wedding, gave references to my employer's, offered opportunities for invest. I could go on and on, but during the process of life we became very close.
 
Wynn had many talents, he could sing, he could preach or teach with an easy style that made you
feel that he was genuinely interested in you, and what advice he could give, that would of most benefit to you. He loved to golf, to bird hunt, to fish. Loved all kind of competitive sports. We had many enjoyable golf tournaments, either in Hawaii, or Myrtle Beach where he won the senior
amateur golf tournament.
 
I vividly remember when we went to a Golf Tournament in Vancouver, B.C. We stayed at a friend's house, just south of the Canadian border, and after a late dinner at his friend's home we started talking about our individual families. One of those discussions where you share your joys and disappointment in life and how God had seen us through. We laughed, we cried until well after midnight, a night I have remembered for it gave us a glimpse into the soul of your friend. How much he cared, how much he loved his family.
 
Wynn not only lived as a Christian, but as a compassionate, loving father to his immediate family, but also to his extended family of in-laws and outlaws(?).
 
One of the most gifted, talented men I have ever had the privilege to know. Yes, He will be missed, but I know he probably already joined the heavenly choir, and knowing Wynn, and how he enjoyed living. I'm sure he is enjoying Heavenly Home a great deal more. (His brother-in-law)

Wynn Cannon, truly a man on a mission… 


Tammy and I moved to Ohio from California in 1997 and more than a few family friends had a hard time adjusting to the three hour time difference. We received a number of calls after we had gone to bed and as much as we tried not to, we did sound like we had been awakened. The call would end quickly with the calling party slightly embarrassed and with the agreement to catch up soon.  

Then there was Wynn. He was on a mission to get attendance numbers up for an upcoming reunion, so we get his call at 11:30 on a work night. About a half hour into the call, Wynn asked what time it was  in Ohio, when we answered midnight, he laughed like only Wynn could then he kept us on the phone for another half an hour.  It was great fun, but again, there was no stopping a man on a mission, Wynn Cannon.

My Memories of Wynn

In times like these, my thoughts go to the scriptures, as well as lyrics from the great hymns of faith for peace, hope and comfort.  One favorite is Numbers 6: 24-26 "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace".  Even though we will miss Wynn, we can look to our Lord and Savior for peace and comfort and know we will see him again one day.

Wynn was my "big Brother".  Since he was 12 years older than me, I don't have a lot of memories of him while growing up in our home.  Most of my thoughts and recollections are after he was married and establishing his own home and family.  After the passing of our parents, Wynn seemed to be the patriarch of the Cannon siblings.  He was a strong spiritual example to the family.  He was successful at just about anything he put his mind to, whether it be business, church or fun.  He had this "gift of gab" and personality that attracted people to him.  Accomplishments ranged from radio announcer, advertising executive, pilot, fisherman, scratch golfer, and conservative political advocate.  He even filled the pulpit on ocassion at Beacon Hill Nazarene when Dad was ill.  Most of all, Wynn was God's man and he devoted his life to his Lord.

One memory I have is when we were kids, we would go to Wenatchee to see Wynn and Marg.  Wynn would take Lee and I to the radio station with him early in the morning.  He would make us do some work and then let us make a record of our talents.  I didn't have any talents but Lee did, so she sang "Crusing Down the River".  I still have the 78 records but nothing to play them on.

Another time, Wynn and Marg came to Denver in a little Cessna airplane back in 1955.  They came in on a Sunday morning so Dad (Grandpa) couldn't pick them up and I was given the task.  I had just gotten my driver's license and I'm not sure whether flying over the mountains in a small plane or riding with me was more nerve wracking.  The airport runway is long gone but the hanger building on Federal Blvd. is still there and is being used as a parts store.

I will miss his wit and advise on life and politics, even when I didn't agree with all he said but he was OLDER and I had to listen.

My memories of Mr.Cannon are him and my dad Gerald VanBebber singing in the choir and watching the two of them up there whispering like little boys and laughing.  When prayer time came they were always peeking when we were supposed to have our eyes shut. He definately was a special guy and one in a million.

Heavenly Father,

     I'd like to introduce my father Wynn Cannon to you and share all that he is to our family. He is a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His smile and wit is infectious and his joy and laughter will brighten any room. He loves deeply and unconditionally and each family member has received this gift time and again.
     I understand from his business relationships that his ethical and moral character was always at the forefront in his conduct and influence. He found time in all his relationships to listen, inspire and encourage those around him without making them feel less in circumstance or position. Many sought his counsel and wisdom and found that he would share the heart of a servant of Christ and the benefits of a life devoted to you. I love him dearly and had a beautiful bond and relationship with him. He allowed his children to grow and find our own paths in this world. He and my mother taught us what in meant to be found and bound to Jesus Christ.
     He transferred his passion of the game of golf and taught the parallels of life's challenges while teaching us. He likes to sing a little and will be available for choir, quartets and solo's. He is a good citizen and is involved and active in his city, state, country and world.
     I want you to know all these things and more because we love and miss him already. Please wrap your arms around him and tell him we love him, but then again you already knew all of this because you are the Living God. I now know you called him home to share him with all of heaven and remind us to come home too.

I remember when Win came from a radio school in Seattle to work at KPQ Wenatchee. We worked together for several years.  This was just after WWII.
A good man, and he will be missed.

My first attendance at Kirkland Nazarene Church was on a Sunday morning, with Patsy back in Atlanta to sell the house.  I was a couple of minutes late for Sunday School, so there were only three people in the foyer:  Wynn Cannon, Jim Stacy, and Pastor Randy Craker.  Wynn gave me an exuberant, hearty welcome, and, as I was signing the register, asked me if I knew Mert Winkle from the Atlanta area.  I did, and thus some common ground was immediately established.  Most importantly, however, I recognized spiritual strength and already felt drawn to the individual and to the church.  That first impression of Wynn as a stalwart Christian was to grow as time went by.

One very pleasant memory is of Wynn, during a Sunday night service, singing a special, "When They Ring Those Golden Bells."  I can never hear nor think of that song without remembering how beautifully Wynn sang it.

Several times Patsy and I were invited by the Cannons to their family Thanksgiving dinner.  We were always warmly received, enjoyed great fellowship and the chance to meet other members of Marj and Wynn's family, and always left completely stuffed with delicious food.  That kindness of Wynn and his family will never be forgotten.

It became a delight to exchange stories and jokes with Wynn, who always had a hearty laugh.  After being away from Seattle for four and one-half years, I still miss being greeted by Wynn on Sunday morning.

I often thought that my father would have really enjoyed knowing Wynn.  Perhaps by now they have met in heaven.

Just last week I was thinking of Wynn and praying for him and, mindful of Dean Trier's death, wondered if we would get to see him again before he passed on, and I prayed to that effect.  It was not to be, but we know that we will see him again one of these days.  Perhaps St. Peter will let him once again sign me in when I arrive.
