It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Mary Jean McClurg Milburn, at the age of 98, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on February 1, 2025. Jean was born on September 28, 1926, to Ernest and Ruby McClurg in St. Louis, Missouri. After graduating from high school, she pursued her passion for music at Washington University in St. Louis. Following her graduation, Jean was the organist for several Methodist churches and taught piano before transitioning to a career in the oil and gas industry.
It was at a Methodist Youth Camp that she met Troy, and the two were married in St. Louis, eventually welcoming three children: Sean, Brent, and Sabrina. The family enjoyed vacations, caring for various animals—including snakes, hawks, & owls —participating in church activities, and sharing laughter during family gatherings. Jean had a special talent for gift-giving, embodying the spirit of Santa Claus for her loved ones. Remarkably, she continued to work in the oil and gas sector well into her eighties, always with a touch of class and her signature high heels.
Jean was a caring, generous friend and a classy lady. Her greatest joys were her two cherished grandchildren, Merrick and Emily. Family gatherings were filled with laughter and warmth, and Jean left a lasting impact on everyone she met. She was courageous, inspirational, kind, loving, and full of joy—a true force of nature who taught us the power of determination and persistence. Despite facing many challenges, including the loss of her brother in World War II at the age of 18, she lived life to the fullest. Her greatest achievements were the love she shared with her husband and the joy of being a devoted mother and grandmother.
Jean is survived by her children Sean (Melissa), Brent (Truett), and Sabrina Milburn and grandchildren Merrick and Emily Milburn.
In her memory, donations may be made to the ACLU, Habitat for Humanity, or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Visitation with the family present will be 5pm-7pm Friday, February 7, 2025 at Bill Merritt Funeral Service.
A Celebration of Jean's life will be 10am Saturday, February 8, 2025 at Bill Merritt Funeral Service with interment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
