Louise Wells McCormick, age 100, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 1, 2021. She was born on February 18, 1921 to JO and Rhoda Wells, the eighth of ten children. Her mother was a teacher and education was very important to her. All ten children went to college. Louise received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of New York; her Master’s Degree from Texas Tech University; and finally her PhD in Home Economics and Clothing Construction from the University of Arkansas. She then taught those subjects at the college level at the University of Michigan, the University of Cincinnati, University of Central Oklahoma (Central State), the Fashion and Arts Institute of Dallas, Sam Houston State University where she participated in an exchange program with Indonesian students. Louise also traveled to outer Mongolia to teach English and stayed in an old Russian army barrack and even drank mare’s milk. She made her daughter’s and granddaughter’s wedding dresses and all of their bridesmaids’ dresses, as well as sewing and tailoring for family members. Louise had a significant impact on so many lives and took great joy from all the successes her family and students achieved. Louise married Roy “Mac” McCormick on September 10, 1944. After a few years of marriage, they welcomed their daughter, Kathy, into the world. Mac’s job with the Continental Baking Company enabled them to live in various parts of the country throughout their marriage. Their final stop was in Oklahoma City to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. Louise’s mother engrained in her children the importance of faith in Jesus Christ and the study of God’s Word. This rich legacy of faith was Louise’s anchor through every season and chapter of her life. It took her and Mac on many mission trips around the world to places like Peru, Latvia, and the Ukraine. Louise continued to share God’s Word with others by hosting various Bible studies at her church, home, and even at several retirement centers. Though Louise was a widow for 21 years, she learned to live independently, while depending fully on Christ. She was a voracious reader, loved cooking, canning, oil painting with her friend, Caroline, and making jellies and jams for her family and friends. Her legacy will live on through her family, her students, and her friends. She would want you to remember her motto: Cling to Jesus! He’s the only thing we can depend on in this ever-changing world. He takes care of you and never leaves you! She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Roy “Mac” McCormick; and her 9 siblings. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Richard Gendron; grandchildren, Amy and David Vanderburg, David and Linder Gendron; 4 great grandchildren, Abigail and Caleb Vanderburg, Everett and Emilia Gendron; 1 great great grandchild, Ryker, and many beloved nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held 3:00 p.m, Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Faith Bible Church in Edmond. Interment will be at Arlington Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Bible Church (Designation: General Missions Fund), or to Sam Houston State University (Designation: Select "Other" type "Fray Stallings Wells Scholarship") or to the charity of your choice.
