Melven married Pamela Calahan in 1981 in Independence, Kansas. Together they blended their families and built a life full of love and adventure. They made their home in South Coffeyville for 25 years before moving to Oklahoma City in 1996.
Melven dedicated much of his life to working as a mechanic, eventually retiring as a manager in road support and warranty for a trucking company. He took great pride in his work and the skills he built over the years.
Outside of work, Melven embraced life with passion. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and he found joy in simple pleasures like baking homemade bread and simply being with family and friends. He and Pamela shared a love for storm chasing and creating memories together on the open road. A talented woodworker, Melven began crafting pens and grew into creating beautiful pieces, including cherished wind chimes.
Above all, Melven loved his family. He especially treasured time spent traveling with them, whether on family cruises, including a memorable trip to Hawaii, or month-long journeys across the country. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of his world, and he lived each day for them.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twelve siblings; and his beloved granddaughter, Markayla Hope James.
Melven is survived by his children; Marc and Karyl James, Mandy and Steve Goins, Josh James, Kathie Baugh, Glenda and James Hankins, Kelli Cantrell, and Michael and Tiffany McClellan; his grandchildren, AJ and Beth Eaves, Brandon and Britni Eaves, Jimmie and Sierra Eaves, Delaney Callahan, Cameron Baugh, Josh and Hillary McClellan, Trinity McClellan, Braylee Luke, Courtland McClellan, Jaxson McClellan, Ashton Burciaga, Kylie and Kaleb Palacios, Raeleigh and Jimmy Vincent, and Malissa James; as well as 21 great-grandchildren, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 11, at 2:00 p.m. at Bill Merritt Funeral Service.
