Ruby D. Portis

Ruby Portis was born to James D. and Lillie Anne Dorough Sept. 30, 1927 in Bowie, Texas and was given into the wonderful arms of Jesus Christ, Nov. 26, 2011. Ruby grew up in Bowie, Texas and attended Bowie Schools, graduating in 1944. She married the late Floyd Buchanan soon after High School and lived in South Texas many years. Later she met and married Jerry Portis. They moved to Bethany, OK in 1952 where she worked at Western Electric for many years, retiring in the late seventies. Ruby was a true friend to many people and a wonderful caregiver to many of her family and friends. She filled the role of Matriarch for our family for many years. She was a wonderful cook and always had large holiday meals at her house. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry L. Portis; and brothers, J.D. and Basil Dorough. She is survived by her son, Jerry Portis, Jr. and wife Mary of Bethany, OK; grandsons, Danny Buchanan and wife Tina of Okla. City, and Andrew Buchanan of Sacramento, CA; great granddaughter, Shaianne Buchanan of Okla. City; brothers, Sherman Dorough of Mustang, OK and Rex Dorough and wife Bettye of Okla. City; and nieces and nephews whom she truly loved and enjoyed. A special thanks to Heritage Assisted Living, Bellevue Nursing Center and Centennial Hospice for their care. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at Bill Merritt Funeral Home. The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 PM – 8 PM.Arrangements under the direction of Bill Merritt Funeral Service, Bethany, OK.
