
Alvin Ward Vogtle III of Birmingham, Alabama, died peacefully at home on March 9, 2022. He was born in Birmingham on October 14, 1947 to Kathryn and Alvin Vogtle, Jr. He graduated from Darlington School in Rome, Georgia in 1966. He attended college at Auburn University, where he became a lifelong fan of AU sports. He completed college at Samford University, with a B.S. Degree. He continued his education at the University of Georgia, where he completed a Master’s Degree in social work.
Alvin moved to Charlottesville, Virginia after graduation and was employed at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center, which is affiliated with the University of Virginia. He met his wife Laura Kincaid there, and they lived in the Charlottesville area for 22 years. He completed a specialty training in family therapy and used this expertise to help numerous clients in his counseling work at the Rehabilitation Center.
Laura and Alvin moved to Birmingham in 1995. There he was employed at the University of Alabama Sparks Center as a social worker until his retirement in 2015.
Alvin loved to travel, and enjoyed good food and good wine. He enjoyed both golf and tennis, and in his younger years he loved to hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains and cross country ski. In addition to his sisters, he loved his niece Kathryn Kirtley, his nephews Christopher Baldwin, Jake Humphrey, Stewart Humphrey, and their children.
Alvin leaves behind his wife Laura, sisters Kathryn Humphrey (Hank) and Anne Moore Baldwin, (Bryan), half-siblings Wade Vogtle, Pat Vogtle, Rachel Sharpe, and Bobby Vogtle, and numerous friends.
A Visitation will be held Monday March 14, 2022 at 12 Noon to 1:00 pm with a celebration of Alvin’s life to follow at 1 pm at Johns-Ridout's Funeral Parlors 2116 University Blvd. Birmingham, AL 35233. In lieu of flowers, please consider gifts to the Southern Environmental Law Center or the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
