

Catherine Kantargis Petelos passed on from this earthly life on Sunday, November 24, 2024. She embraced life to the fullest, cherishing her home, family, and church.
Catherine was born on September 27, 1935, in Mytilini, Greece. In 1946, she immigrated to the United States with her family. She attended Ensley High School and graduated from Birmingham-Southern College. Catherine married the love of her life, Angelos Petelos, and together they built a beautiful life. Their home became a beloved gathering place for friends and family, filled with music, food, and dancing. Catherine was a devoted mother to her son, Nick, and a loving grandmother to her grandsons. Her warm smile, kind heart, and radiant spirit touched all who knew her.
Catherine was a faithful member of Holy Trinity - Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral and an active participant in the Philoptochos Organization.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Angelos Petelos; her daughter, Rena Marie Petelos; her parents, Tom and Maria Kantargis; her brother, Andrew Kantargis; and her in-laws, Nicholas and Irene Petelos.
She is survived by her son, Nicholas Angelos Petelos (Yvonne), and her two grandsons, Angelos Nicholas Petelos and James Nicholas Petelos. She will also be deeply missed by her sister-in-law and closest friend, Maroula Kantargis, and her nieces, Toula Froemelt (Torsten), Sia Newman (Larry), and Andrea Kantargis.
Her passing is also mourned by her extended and cherished Petelos family: Pauline Lovoy of Alhambra, California; Maria Latto (Tim) of Charleston, South Carolina; Martha Ledlow (Don), Dr. John Petelos (Evelyn), Billy Petelos (Babs), Tony Petelos (Teresa), all of Birmingham; and Grace Dallair (Richard) of Fishersville, Virginia, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, November 29th, at Holy Trinity - Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 307 19th Street South, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service.
Interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery, officiated by Reverend Father Gregory Edwards, assisted by Father Micah Hirschy. A memorial luncheon will follow the interment at the Father Emanuel Vasilakis Hellenic Center, adjacent to the Cathedral.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity - Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
