Christopher Roberts Clemens, known to friends and family as Chris, passed away peacefully in Birmingham, Alabama on November 27, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. Born on January 6, 1953 at Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan, Chris was the second son of then Captain Michael Clemens, a career Air Force officer and WW2 fighter pilot, and Ramona Agnes Clemens of Portland Oregon.
Chris inherited his interest in cars and auto mechanics from his father and his love of art from his mother. As an Air Force brat he lived all over the US and in Europe before settling in Texas and then California. Chris's interest in mechanics and automobiles led him to become a factory-trained Alfa Romeo mechanic. He co-owned Alfa Marin, an Alfa Romeo and Ferrari shop in San Rafael, California with his father. His passion for fine wines inspired him to co-found Tantalus Wines in Sonoma, California.
As a child, Chris was known for his slapstick humor, often doing whatever it took to make others laugh. His lively, carefree spirit and love of life brought joy to everyone he encountered. However, his life was not without its challenges. At the age of 14, Chris underwent his first major hip surgery, and for the rest of his life, he was plagued with degenerative bone issues. Despite the unrelenting pain from multiple extensive surgeries, he maintained his resilience, determination, and zest for life.
Chris is survived by his elder brother, Steve, his cousin, Chris Clarke, his second cousins Andrew and Patrick, and Andrew’s daughter Elizabeth Clarke. Though his life was marked by hardship, Chris’s strength, humor, and love for his family and friends will always be remembered. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private service will be held in his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who knew him well raise a glass to his memory, and keep Chris in their hearts whenever they gather to enjoy good food and drink in the company of those they love.
