

Fred Kanter, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, 96 years old, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2021. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Doris Michalove Kanter. He is survived by children Ellen Folks (Charles) Baton Rouge, LA, David Kanter (Sheree) Charlotte, NC and Drew Kanter (Jennifer) of Birmingham, AL 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his older brother, Edward Lewis Kanter and parents Abraham and Lena Lewis Kanter. Born in Hendersonville, North Carolina he was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in 1945 and a lifelong ardent Tar Heel fan. Fred was a Navy veteran, rising to Lieutenant and serving both in World War II and Korea. Relocating to Birmingham in 1952, he worked for The Feldstein Company (a wholesale distribution firm) as its President as well as with Jones Sportswear (an activewear manufacturing firm) until retirement in 1997. A lifelong sports fan and tennis player, he enjoyed another career as an energetic community volunteer at numerous organizations devoted to improving the lives of others. Fred served on the Boards of Temple Emanu-El, Levite Jewish Community Center and Pinetree Country Club. Graveside service with Military Honors will be at Elmwood Cemetery on October 3, 2021. Donations in Fred's memory may be made to Collat Jewish Family Services or the Doris and Fred Kanter Family Fund at Temple Emanu-El.
