John Norman Corey, Jr., age 92, passed away peacefully on February 6. John was born on December 21, 1926 in Richmond, Virginia to Helen Pretlow Corey and John Norman Corey. He moved to Birmingham when he was 6 years old, attended Avondale Elementary and graduated from Marion Military Institute. He attended The University of the South and graduated with a bachelors degree in history. He joined the Merchant Marines during WWII and served in the Army during the Korean War.
After the army he joined his uncle selling oil drilling equipment in Venezuela for several years. He returned to Birmingham to join his father in the employee benefits consulting business. He continued the business until he retired and sold the business.
He was married to Douglass Rushton for 60 years prior to her death in 2016. He was also pre- ceded in death by his son David Douglass Corey. He is survived by his sister Betty Rand Miller, his sons John (Sheri), Allen (Kathryn) and daughter-in-law Beth Bentley Corey and his grandchildren Doug (Evelyn), Cannon (Alexandria), Quinn Scanlan (Ryan), Allen, Helen Cumbee, Elizabeth and Robert and a host of great-grand dogs.
John was active in Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, Redstone Club, Mountain Brook Club and the Cathedral Church of the Advent. John was a lifelong learner and enjoyed taking college courses throughout his life. He had a particular interest in antique maps, playing tennis and his monthly supper club. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going to the family farm, the beach and traveling.
In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, 2017 6th Avenue North, Birmingham AL 35203.
Visitation will be at 10:00a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00a.m. at The Cathedral Church of the Advent.
