
He was born in Mobile, Alabama on December 30, 1938.
Mr. Marty graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile in 1957, and attended Marion Military Institute.
He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1962, where he was president of his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, and Deputy Wing Commander of the Air Force ROTC. At Alabama he was enrolled in the creative writing program of the late Doctor Hudson Strode, Professor Emeritus of English.
Upon graduation Mr. Marty was commissioned in the United States Air Force and served a total of eight years in the Air Defense Command, and the Georgia Air National Guard. He was discharged with the rank of Captain.
Following military service Mr. Marty attended the University of Alabama Law School. Thereafter he was employed by Lockheed Aircraft Company in Marietta Georgia. With Lockheed he served in various positions in Marketing and International Sales, as Lockheed-Georgia's representative in Northern Europe and South America. Mr. Marty held Commercial, Multi Engine, and Instrument pilot ratings.
In 1977 he returned to Birmingham where he was associated in business as a manufacturer's representative with his late father-in -law, William Veenschoten. In 1981 he became president of Veenschoten & Company and served in this capacity until 1998. They were active in providing power plant equipment to Southern Company and the pulp and paper industry. Among others accounts he represented Copes-Vulcan of Erie, Pennsylvania, in Alabama for 25 years. Mr. Marty served five years as National Chairman of the Copes-Vulcan Representative Council.
A lifelong sailor, he began sailing with his late Grandñther at the Mobile Yacht Club in the 1940's. He has been a member of the Mobile and Atlanta Yacht Clubs, and most recently the Fairhope Yacht Club. In Birmingham he was a past member of the Downtown Club and The Club. He was also a member of the University of Alabama Alumni Association.
In 2015 The Center for War and Memory at the University of South Alabama published his book Hostages to the Sea, a memory of Watermen Steamships during World War 2. In addition, John published numerous articles on the history of aviation.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jennie Hamilton Marty of Mobile and John L. Marty the former Executive Vice-President of Waterman Steamship Lines of Puerto Rico. He is survived by his wife, Vicky Veenschoten Marty, Brother, Robert Marty, his three children, John L. Marty III (Stacey Brady), Roberta B Marty, Edwin Marty (Andrea). Memorial Service to be announced at a later date.
